From meeting Dr Karl for the entry of his portrait into the 2015 Archibald Prize to being selected as a finalist in the 2015 Portia Geach Memorial Award for her portrait of Rosie Batty, Jac Clark of Morabon has some impressive accolades under her belt. But surprisingly, she’s neither formally nor classically trained. “I am a self-taught artist,” says Jac. “I like experimenting with different styles and techniques.” Jac works predominantly on portrait commissions, and this focus has allowed the artist to refine her skillset. we love THE DARK, MOODY TONES OF THE TIMBER VENEER Designed by Matthew Foti for Carrera Kitchens, it was important this space was durable and easy to clean. With four children under the one roof, the selection of a dark woodgrain finish for the cabinets was a practical and stylish choice, with the cabinetry providing contrast against the grey tiled flooring, white walls, benchtop and overhead cabinets. The metallic glass splashback ties in nicely with the floor tiles and stainless-steel appliances while adding another layer to the design. The inclusion of a large kitchen island was a must-have for the clients, providing space for casual dining and food preparation. Melburnian maker Tamara Maynes planted her design roots at a young age, thanks to a family of creatives surrounding her with their skills. Witnessing the revival of the ’70s craft movement firsthand, Tamara’s future as a creative was laid out early on without her even knowing it. Officially kicking off her career in her 20s, Tamara began making interior pieces and editorial props. Studying writing, fashion and pattern making after high school, she didn’t formally study design, but got plenty of hands-on experience by taking every opportunity that came her way. “Getting as serious about design as I was about making was bound to happen, considering the two are essentially inseparable,” she says. “Because of the nature of what I was making, there were always unique technical and materialbased problems…

“Good design comes from an honest place with an awareness of its presence in the world,” says Christine McDonald, senior designer at Designer Rugs. And it’s collections like LØCAL that prove she’s committed to the cause. “With my designs for the LØCAL collection, I wanted the rugs to feel earthy, raw, aged and unpretentious,” she says. To ensure longevity and quality, Christine’s designs are hand-knotted using pure Tibetan wool, meaning there’s no need to use chemicals to produce the yarn. “Each rug describes a personal aspect of myself and is based on the region of Wollongong where I grew up and still live to this day,” she adds. When you reside in the Sydney suburb of Cronulla, it’s essential there is a connection between your home and the beach. Local architect Reg Lark was called upon by the client to create a family home, but not as you know it; this residence is all about minimalism and simplicity. Originally a single-level cottage, the narrow site — just 6 metres wide and 34 metres long — had to be completely cleared to make way for Reg’s vision. With a brief revolving around the creation of three distinct zones — the ground level for the children, the first level for shared activities and an adults-only retreat on the second floor — it made sense to start from scratch with a new build. Perched on the eastern fringes of London’s West End, Covent Garden is a place full of culture, from the historic fruit and veg market to being the location of choice for the musical version of My Fair Lady and the Alfred Hitchcock film Frenzy. FORMstudio saw the potential of a terraced office block and pushed ahead with their vision to transform the space into a sixlevel house full of light. The name Mr Jason Grant is so synonymous with the relaxed interior styling blog that people may forget a real person exists behind the scenes. And he’s worked tirelessly for 10 years to create a brand and identity that equals quality and individuality. Japanese heritage and a Brazilian upbringing is an unlikely combination, but as Mari Bray has proven, it’s also a creative goldmine. Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, Mari leads a life brimming with creativity. Her most recent foray into hand-crafted ceramics was preceded by a bachelor’s degree in visual arts and an early career in advertising. Although she settled in Australia in 2002, it wasn’t until 2014 that Mari and a close friend took a course in ceramics at a local studio. “I was instantly transported back to my childhood and since then, you can catch me elbow-deep in mud,” she says.
