Anne-Claire Petre is a globetrotter by nature, crediting her creative spirit for taking her around the world and honing her skills along the way. Now based in Collingwood, Melbourne, the furniture designer decided to put down roots and establish Anaca Studio, and she hasn’t looked back since. Like all designers, Anne-Claire has a fire in her belly when it comes to creating. Award-winning designer Emma Maxwell was always concerned about the conservation of design, and this laid the foundation for her career. With a desire to preserve the fundamental parts of design, Emma now uses all forms of art, literature and nature to inspire her work. After studying Fine Arts with a major in Sculpture at RMIT, Emma found that being hands on, carving wood and making installation pieces taught her a lot more about design than drawing and academic techniques alone. A trip to London to explore the world of film production and art direction in an advertising agency also didn’t hurt. Located in Moscow, Russia, the Birds apartment is a home where nature meets elegance. Revamped by interior designer Veronica Sudnikova from ProVS Studio, the residence is full of texture, colour and unique accents. Inspired by the beauty of birds, Veronica was particularly taken by a photo featuring a flying flock of the winged creatures which went on to inform the design brief. Due to its notoriously high levels of commitment and sacrifice, making the leap to pursue art as a full-time job can be intimidating, but Romy Northover felt she had no other choice. “I was born into it … I love it so much it sustains me,” she enthuses. The client wanted a kitchen that combined a modern design with classic materials and which was considerate to the home’s layout. The island is integral to the kitchen, which was designed by Western Cabinets, and boasts a solid jarrah timber tabletop, which is cleverly cantilevered at 1600mm, creating a casual dining zone. The outdoor spaces of the Luxe Lodge, like its interior, are bold and organic, with a splash of luxe, hence the property’s name. “My goal for outside was to create an artistic Australian version of a sparse, arty, Palm Springs-style landscape design,” says designer Mark Gacesa of Ultraspace, who designed both the house and outdoor spaces. “While the house is very linear in its design, the gardens are a symmetrical freeform shape and flow around the house like a big welcoming hug. Eight years ago, Sally Pottharst and Jodie Fried were frustrated that they couldn’t find products on the market which combined ethics and aesthetics. Unable to source handmade, high-quality and timeless designs, they decided to create their own — without compromising sustainability or social responsibility in the process — and Armadillo & Co was born.
