Sydney’s Lower North Shore is a bustling precinct — and for good reason. A stone’s throw away from the city, the area is also known for its lush greenery, cafe culture and family-focused nature. All these elements prompted architect and homeowner Fadi Fadhil and his family to put down roots in Chatswood and create a residence that’s not your average home. This time, the architect was his own client. Working with a four-bedroom semi, the end goal was to extend the building from the side and the back to realise a more sculptural residence that provided ample space for a growing family. A Victorian Italianate house from the 1890s is not easy to come by. A notable phase in 19th-century classical architecture, the structures built were simply enchanting — and it’s hard not to fall head over heels for a residence influenced by the movement. Owners Vanessa and Jesse Gerner were romanced by this Northcote house, cracks and all, and decided to work with OLA Studio to preserve the ethos of the original structure while adding a modern extension for their family of five. When a structural engineer expresses doubts over how much longer a house can support itself, it’s usually a red flag. Combining French and Italian sensibilities, the kitchen pays homage to the district’s roots while maintaining a contemporary ambience for the photographer who calls the loft home. Named the Ego kitchen, the design utilises a stainless-steel palette and focuses on ergonomic lines and simplicity. A generous kitchen island (2088mm x 1140mm) is the anchor of the space and provides ample room for the preparation of meals along with designated areas for cooking and serving. This single-fronted terrace home’s Georgian aesthetic is a big part of its appeal; it is a running theme throughout the home and was taken into consideration for the bathroom renovation project. Georgian tapware and accessories by Reece and a Phoenix Nostalgia vintage shower arm and rose were incorporated into this bathroom to ensure it blended seamlessly with the style of the rest of the house. Prior to the renovation, the bathroom and laundry was separated by a dated sliding door, which was replaced with a modesty wall beside the toilet suite. This new wall also separates the space from the adjoining Europeanstyle laundry, which also features Reece tapware. Growing up surrounded by colonial interiors, it comes as no surprise that Adelaide’s Huw McConachy was drawn to design.
