The September issue is traditionally the one that features all that we can look forward to for the spring season. Among the offerings are those from the Milan Furniture Fair, held each year in April. It is the world’s largest trade fair of its kind, showcasing the latest furniture designs from countries around the world. Kirralee Robinson has had quite the chameleonic career. After dabbling in visual arts and floristry, she decided to launch her own homewares brand, Kirralee & Co. Since that sweet serendipitous moment, the brand has boasted great success, due in no small part to Kirralee’s understanding of the modern Australian aesthetic. “I recalled enjoying fashion subjects at uni, so I did some self-educating about the fashion world,” says Kirralee. “I quickly became aware of the high wastage issue in design, which led us to make our own furniture and decor,” she says. “It was probably around six months later that people were asking to buy the vases we had made, so we just kept going.” A devotee of minimalism and a lover of wood, Kirralee focuses on shapes, lines and clean-cut…

Aseismic aesthetic shift is occurring. It may be true that Scandinavian style has long dominated the pages of home design magazines, but no more. Action and reaction dictate that change is the only constant and, as such, contrast is coming. And it is warm, rich and rather wonderful. If you thought life in the South of France couldn’t get any better, throw in a penthouse with ocean views and an interior created by renowned designer Stephanie Coutas. For one homeowner, enjoying pristine weather and a beautiful home in this stunning part of the world is just a part of everyday living. Comprising 330 square metres, the penthouse is “the perfect illustration of what the job of an interior designer is all about”, says Stephanie. The home includes one master suite with a walkin closet and bathroom, three guest bedrooms with three bathrooms and dressing areas, as well as communal living spaces. The clients came to Western Cabinets with the intention of extending their beautiful character home to accommodate their growing family. Their brief to designer Alysia Pekel included ensuring the kitchen and scullery design worked seamlessly in the new extension, and benefited from clever planning, natural light and flow. The main objective of the renovation and home extension was to create a betterproportioned living space. The kitchen was repositioned into the new extension, while the existing rear bedroom was utilised for the scullery. Marc Hertrich and Nicolas Adnet are the designers behind Studio MHNA, their namesake Parisian firm. Working together for more than 20 years, the pair decided to change things up and be their own clients after embarking on a quest to redesign their home in Paris. The residence of choice enjoyed a vivid past life as a tool factory, print shop, clothing store and a photographer’s studio before Marc and Nicolas snapped it up. Taipei is a modern metropolis that fuses Japanese traditions with Chinese sensibilities. T he owners wanted the new kitchen to be opened up to the rest of the house, maximise space and, most importantly, to include an island bench to make the most of the harbour views. Removing part of the top bulkhead and balustrade, which restricted entry, gave us room to move and utilise the space for maximum effect and functionality. Sarah Scully’s work exemplifies the immediacy of urban art and the honesty of bold mark making. Sarah paints to inspire others, to empower women, to empathise and to understand. As the residence’s original kitchen was becoming dilapidated, the homeowners decided to knock it down and place it in a different part of the house. The result was the light and airy kitchen pictured. The homeowners love to entertain, so they requested the kitchen be the centrepiece of the entertaining area at the rear of the house. Large sliding doors were installed to allow the space to extend seamlessly out to the patio, garden, barbecue and pool at the rear of the home, forming one large entertaining area. When the director of Stilus Design and Construction, Glen Fludder, landed the job of constructing an outdoor space in Queensland’s picturesque coastal region, he knew he had quite a task on his hands. The family envisioned an area that was intimate yet spacious, modern with a soft Balinese influence, as well as durable against the coastal elements. Of course, the space needed to enhance the waterfront views of Pumicestone Passage, but it was crucial that this didn’t interfere with the shore views from the home.
