BIOMATERIALS AT LONDON DESIGN FAIR Material of the Year at the 2019 London Design Fair was “Second Yield” or biomaterials, and some great ideas and innovations using substances usually considered waste were showcased. Before its makeover, the home exuded a distinctly ’90s vibe, complete with glossy white bathrooms, corner spa baths and multicoloured feature tiles, so the house needed updating to accommodate the owner’s changing lifestyle. It is a truth universally acknowledged that if one is a cat, one must be in search of a cosy nook to curl up in. It’s not often that the career aspirations you have as a kid are realised later on in life. But a piece of advice from a school teacher introduced aspiring artist Clark Bardsley to the concept of industrial design, unknowingly handing him a nugget for his future. Leaving his rural Waikato home in New Zealand after finishing school, Clark made the move to study at Victoria University’s School of Design in Wellington. After completing his studies, the lure of metal came calling when Clark joined Auckland brassware brand Methven as a designer. The word “extension” can strike fear in the bravest of homeowners looking to expand their living quarters. Messy, noisy and time-consuming, most extensions are laborious and hurt the hip pocket. For this family of five, a home where they could create many memories to come was of utmost importance. But they didn’t want to just do it anywhere. Location was key and, luckily for Steven, his wife and their three young boys, all under the age of six, this magnificent plot in Sydney’s north provided something to write home about. At first glance, this site wasn’t exactly ideal. It features steep bushland, lots of rock ledges and a 12m crossfall over the build area, which means water and gradient issues. Simple, elegant and with a touch of modern flair, this grandiose home makes an impact at first glance thanks to its large size, rendered concrete facade and the sleek interiors visible through wide windows. A neutral palette dominates, off set by bursts of vivid colours and muted tones that lift the space. The colour scheme is consistent throughout the home, from the paint colours, tiles, door frames and skirtings to the furnishings. The perfect kitchen is a marriage of design and practicality to create a room that you just want to be in. It’s the little things that can truly make a difference, from the amount of light to the choice of flooring. This room certainly has the flooring covered with Classico Brindisi tiles, a modern interpretation of classical Moroccan style. Constructed in Spain, these tiles are made from glazed porcelain and have a cushion edge, as well as an R10 slip rating, making them a great choice for the kitchen space. White storm benchtops sit beautifully on charcoal-coloured cabinets, with the pairing brought together by a stunning Calacatta marble splashback. Charcoal-stained floors unify the interior, while oak veneer adds warmth and homeliness to this special space. Sharp geometric detail amid a black-and-white scheme was a winner for Tasmanian designer Lydia Maskiell. Known for his strong sense of style, David Weeks has developed a unique flair that keeps him one step ahead of the pack. The mark of a great home is its ability to change and grow with its occupants. The Grove has undergone major work to make its owners’ golden years as comfortable and convenient as possible. Scintillating views towards the mouth of Sydney Harbour over Balmoral Beach greeted the original brick-and-tile building, which was last renovated in 1988. With a 15m height difference between the street frontage and the rear boundary, the steeply sloping site and its three-level dwelling (with a separate double garage on street level) needed a renovation like Sydney Harbour needs the Coat Hanger. There’s something timeless about them and they have a restrained elegance that ensures they transcend passing fads and changing trends.
