After many years working in the design and manufacture of leather goods, Carmen Hijosa searched for an alternative material that would be kinder to the planet. And with leather becoming more scarce and expensive, the time was right to find a product to service this growing market. The breakthrough came when Carmen discovered that pineapple leaf fibres, a by-product from the pineapple harvest, could be turned into a non-woven textile. By extracting the fibres from the pineapple leaves through a procedure called decortications, then passing them through an industrial process, they become a non-woven textile which is the base of the material Piñatex. What do you get when you put a former police detective and a teacher in the tool shed? RAW Sunshine Coast. Partners in business and life, Chris Rawlins and Katie Bishop design and manufacture bespoke furniture that’s also kind to the environment. HOME DESIGN & EUSSEN LIVING STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION The Home Design & Eussen Living Student Design Awards 2016 competition brief was to completely renovate and fi t-out Barangaroo House, which operates as accommodation for Indigenous Australian families and students in Sydney. The cottage is also used to accommodate Year 12 graduates who wish to stay in the city after they’ve completed high school until they commence university or a job. This is only temporary accommodation, not permanent, so it has transient occupants.
