For energy-efficient cooling, ceiling fans are near impossible to beat. Even when left to run continuously, a ceiling fan’s power consumption is incredibly low. Take the Fanco Infinity-Id DC, for example. This popular model, available from Universal Fans, consumes only 3.2 watts on the lowest speed, and only 20.2 watts on the highest speed (based on the 48-inch model). This means that if the Infinity ID were left on low speed for 24 hours a day all year, the approximate running cost would be between $7-$11 for 12 months (based on a tariff of between 25-40 cents/kWh). Creating a modern building in a metropolitan environment requires balance and careful consideration. Respecting the existing cityscape while creating a structure that is modern in style and technique isn’t always easy. Yet the team at Gardiner Architects has achieved this in High St Apartments, located in Melbourne’s Thornbury. This mixed-use building consists of 13 apartments, a ground-floor car park and restaurant facing High Street. Some apartment buildings can feel a little like a series of motel rooms, with each space a mirror of the other. Gardiner Architects challenged this convention by creating 13 unique spaces that seek to maximise their individual aspects. Inspired by principles of industrial and Brutalist design and built by Gremmo Homes, this abode utilises a combination of natural materials, bold colours and contrasting textures to create a one-of-a-kind space. The visual impact upon entering the home is immediate, largely thanks to a concrete feature wall. The textured wall was made by imprinting the wet concrete with planks of sawn oregon timber. Large-form marble tiles were predominantly used throughout the ground floor to add brightness to the space, while marble slabs create the numerous stairs connecting the varying levels of the ground floor.
