Renovating heritage homes is a tricky business. Aside from the red tape and regulations, choosing products that sympathise with, and complement, the original style of the home can be hard to come by. That’s where Paarhammer comes in. Jewel Box was a rundown bungalow in South Yarra before Lovell Chen Architects got its hands on it. The owner was committed to using Passive House principles to restore the outside of this Edwardian bungalow and honour the heritage bones of the 1920s building. In accordance with Passive House principles to be used throughout, the home required highly energy-efficient windows and doors. The Palm Springs Mid-Century Modernist aesthetic continues to hold us in its thrall. It’s a bit retro, a bit glam and conjures images of glitzy poolside cocktail parties. Popular TV presenter Shelley Craft and her family had purchased and renovated this Modernist Byron Bay home, then built a garden studio designed in Palm Springs style. Rejuvenating the pool and surrounding outdoor spaces was next on the agenda. In doing so, David Franklin, of the Franklin Group, had to ensure the studio and house would seamlessly integrate with the large lawn, garden beds, entertaining area and outdoor shower. The design intent for this project, situated on a suburban Melbourne block, was to create a unique and timeless home with a clean aesthetic that also utilised colour and texture to create visual interest. Catering to a large family, the home needed to be minimal in upkeep, as well as functional, while also enhancing the family’s lifestyle and entertaining needs.
