When a professional couple in their 60s downsized, they were done with the typical muted boring beige environments found in traditional homes. Their new home, an apartment in Sydney’s Surry Hills, had a utilitarian-type feel, with a dominant Antique White palette that resulted in a cold, impersonal atmosphere. The electrical systems, paint and flooring were all noticeably dated and in need of refreshing, and the commercial-grade carpet upstairs only added to the sterile ambience. Home to two avid rock climbers who wanted to spend more time in the mountains, this unique dwelling, designed by Anderson Architecture and built by Northcote Constructions, is saddled with more than just natural beauty; it also lies within an area prone to bushfires. To combat the risk of fire, and provide the owners with a sustainable and protected home, Paarhammer BAL-FZ windows and doors were installed to ensure that bushfire requirements were met, while visually adding to the aesthetic appeal of the property. Curves in architecture have existed for thousands of years and in the last handful, we’ve seen a resurgence of curved architectural forms in home exteriors, interiors, furniture and cabinetry. Curves serve to soften hard edges, they add elegance, warmth and visual appeal. This is because humans are innately drawn to organic shapes and forms found in the natural world. The work of data visualisation researcher Manuel Lima in The Book of Circles explains that circles are a 40,000-year-old human fascination. Humans are especially compelled towards the shape. There’s always been an undeniable charm found in this heritage-listed home, from the soaring ceilings to the leadlight features in the windows, casting playful patterns across the floor. Yet while there was some good to be found in the bones of this building, there were a lot of flaws that had left the homeowners dissatisfied, too. Collaroy Kitchen Centre has breathed new life into this Bayview home, delivering a stunning kitchen renovation that beautifully balances modern simplicity with classic touches. The previous space was dark and dated, featuring large terracotta tiles in a diamond pattern, grey cabinetry and black granite benchtops, which made the kitchen feel heavy.
