You’re instantly swept up in a carnival of riotous colours, patterns and artworks that might have been at odds with one another in any other abode, but under Tarlan’s tasteful watch, they each have their own place. Assuming the mantle of a family business is no simple task. For some, it might be a lifelong dream; for others, an unwanted imposition. It’s the former for sisters Rachel and Hannah Gurney – successors to the luxurious De Gournay homeware brand, founded in 1986 by their father, Claud Cecil Gurney and distributed in Hong Kong by Altfield Interiors – who have been literally surrounded by the family legacy since they were children. Creating the interiors and products that we all regularly use throughout our daily lives, design studios are presented with a fascinating challenge when it comes to conceiving their own office space where all the magic happens. For British design agency Layer, an additional obstacle presented itself: coming up with a design that accurately reflects the versatile toolkit the company has to offer.
