French architect and designer Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) is one of the giants of 20th-century modernist and humanist design, a trailblazer in innovation, and an avant-garde visionary whose work remains contemporary. A free spirit and fiercely independent woman, a sportswoman, traveller, and a pioneering futurist designer who championed good design for all, she created functional living spaces through her strong belief “that better design helps create a better society”. JOHNNY SHUM MAKE IT WORKS “I believe a high-quality life comes from the pursuit of details,” says Johnny Shum, founder of interior design studio Make It Works – and the creative mind behind a medley of well-appointed homes in Hong Kong. “We devote ourselves to each facet of a project so that clients can experience the life they desire the moment they step into the home,” he says. Built on a one-acre stud farm in Bhugaon, Pune, in the Indian state of Maharashtra, is a 1,500 square-foot home inspired by Indian heritage and equine love. It is the second home for a family of four – a couple and their daughters – as well as their horses. “The intention was to create something that resonates with their love for [Indian] heritage, and to fuse it with a stud farm,” says Poonam Mehta, principal designer at AMPM Designs, which lent its expertise to the interiors. LOCATION: Boston, US Mix-used development Five-star hotel and luxury condominium Four Seasons Hotel & Private Residences One Dalton Street, Boston, is the new addition to the Boston skyline as the tallest residential building in New England, and the tallest constructed in the city in more than 40 years. Nestled in the heart of Boston’s historic Back Bay neighbourhood, One Dalton was conceived by the late architect Henry N. Cobb in collaboration with local architecture firm Cambridge Seven Associates. The 61-storey One Dalton takes its cues from Boston’s past and future to make for a “soft triangle” sculptural form to capture the sweeping views while reducing corridors. When designing a house with a view of the sweeping Swan River, the first rule should be: get out of the way; and this is precisely what the architect of this three-storey apartment in Perth has done. “The residence has a clear vision: let the occupants experience the landscape from the moment they step foot onto the site,” says project architect, John LeClare Josephs, from Superseed Architecture. Perched some 25 metres above sea level and etched into the limestone cliff-side over Perth’s sought-after Blackwall Reach, this singular residence is separated into two clear volumes, joined by transparent sun halls to provide an unobstructed vision from virtually any angle.
