Hilly Nachman of The Fireplace Studio offers advice on installing a fireplace: • When it comes to a new installation, a freestanding cast-iron fireplace, such as Annabel chose, is a good option. “It’s easy to position and more efficient than an open fireplace – you’ll use less wood and your heat output will be between 70–80% as opposed to an open fireplace that might be 10–20%,” says Hilly. Heat is spread from all sides of the fireplace; no heat is lost to surrounding masonry and the exposed flue also radiates heat. • The size of the unit depends on the size of the area you want to heat. Islands have become increasingly popular in kitchens as they provide extra work and storage space and encourage socialising while cooking. Designer Nialè van der Merwe of Easylife Kitchens offers the following advice: • When incorporating an island into your kitchen, make sure there’s sufficient space between it and the surrounding cabinets for easy movement. If you need to open an oven door, a 1 100 – 1 200mm gap is best; otherwise, a 900mm walkway will do. • The height will depend on how you use the island. For prep work, the ergonomic industry standard height is 900mm. If you intend to dine at the island on dining chairs, you could add a dropped section with a height of 745mm. Renovating apartments, where people live in close proximity, is a bigger challenge nowadays as many more people work from home, says Greg Anderson of SL Property Trust, the managing agent for the apartment block in which Brett lives. Unforeseen issues can create massive inconvenience and usually cost time and money. Karin and Shaun Nel’s house in the Chelsea Conservancy outside Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape is light and open-plan to make the most of their surroundings and it’s beautifully finished off with chic furnishings. “I created a boho beach feel with white and accents of wood and rattan,” says Karin. “The wood brings in a natural element and breaks the white of the walls. This limited palette creates a calm, serene atmosphere.” The house, which they call Seaview, looks out over the ocean just a few kilometres away. “This also enhances a sense of tranquillity. Since the Pieterses love the Cape Dutch style, they wanted to give the facebrick walls a smooth finish. “The plaster initially cracked but thanks to a special bonding agent and quality paint, this is now a thing of the past. We realise that paint entails ongoing maintenance but if you use a quality product, you don’t need to paint every year,” says Marilé. Jacque Sherman of Ikhaya Futurehouse Systems, a member of the Green Building Council, explains the advantages of building with corrugated expanded polystyrene (EPS): • The materials are manufactured in SA and due to their light weight (approximately 5kg/m² when unplastered) can be easily and inexpensively transported around the country. • The panels are encapsulated with a 650MPA high-tensile galvanized steel mesh that once covered in standard 14MPA plaster creates a 13-ton load sheer per linear metre. Twenty-three years ago, Brett Anderson-Terry moved into Peak View, a lovely well-maintained apartment building nestled between lush trees in Cape Town, with Table Mountain on one side and the sprawling city on the other. “When you want to break out a wall, you must be careful not to demolish a load-bearing wall which supports the roof.” But how does one know if a wall is load-bearing? “Go and look in the roof space where the ceiling beams rest on a wall,” he explains. “If there is a gap between the roof trusses and the wall, the wall doesn’t support the weight of the roof. “In the past, the idea of putting wallpaper in a bathroom would have seemed ludicrous,” says Cara Saven of Cara Saven Wall Design. “The reason for this is that most wallpapers are made up of paper, at least in part. Paper and moisture are not friends – never have been, never will be. “But this is not the case with the new generation of custom-printed wallpapers, which have no paper elements at all. Frikkie Greeff, managing director of Woodoc, shares his expert knowledge on wooden countertops in the kitchen: Wood is a great option for countertops; it’s attractive, warm and naturally hygienic. However, it’s important that it is treated and maintained properly. Any sealer or varnish that creates a solid coating on top of the wood inhibits its natural resistance to germs, so it’s important to opt for a sealer that can live interactively with its environment. This means using a product that will penetrate the wood but forms a microporous surface through which the diffusion of air and moisture can still take place.
