Dark leaves Elsa van Tonder of Gordon’s Bay writes I have two ‘Eureka’ lemon trees in large terracotta pots that are now about two years old, but the leaves of the one have started to turn dark in colour. Is this okay, or is my lemon tree developing a problem? JJ replies Discolouration on new growth, especially during the colder months, isn’t a problem. However, in your case, the dark discolouration is quite severe. The main cause is psylla insects that are attacking the leaves and causing that bubbly appearance. Treat your lemon tree with either Aphicide or Plantcare as a quick solution or use long-lasting Complete 350SC as a systemic solution. ADVICE When to prune roses James van Wyk of Clarens-writes Our winters are very cold and we often have late frost. When is the right time to prune my bed of ‘Liz McGrath’ roses? Ludwig replies In the Eastern Free State and around the Drakensberg, it’s best to delay pruning until the second half of August as these areas are likely to experience late frost into early September which will burn the new shoots of roses if pruned too soon. The benefit of pruning later is that sprouting is slow while temperatures remain low. By the time new leaves have developed, the frost should be over. Another exception is subtropical areas.
