I started collecting luggage and dealing in vintage clothes when I was at school in the 1980s, and Bentleys grew from that enthusiasm. I then opened my first shop in Chelsea in 1996. For me, the appeal of vintage luggage is the design, mix of materials and quality of the craftsmanship. Leather is a wonderfully sustainable, longlasting material that ages beautifully. When it's combined with cast-brass fittings and hand-stitched detailing, it's reminiscent of an era when travelling was a real luxury. It was as much about the journey as the destination. Steamer trunks by brands such as Louis Vuitton and Goyard are some of the most popular. They've proved to be excellent investments and the market continues to remain strong. Think Finland, think clean lines, white walls and minimal contemporary furniture. This was not the aesthetic of choice for AnnMari Månsson and her partner Henrik in their flat in the Finnish town of Ekenäs. Here, white is offset with black-painted woodwork, daring gold details (including, ingeniously, gold leaf-covered kitchen tiles) and William Morris wallpaper. And, when it comes to furnishings, almost everything is old. In fact, only the bed, sofa and a few other pieces are new. ‘Growing up, we didn't have the opportunity to buy new things, so buying second-hand has always been my first choice. Andy Warhol (1928–1987) became the face of 1960s Pop Art in the US then worldwide with portraits most famously of Marilyn Monroe and Campbell's soup cans. Coming to light now more than 60 years later are his textile designs from the previous decade. This is thanks to the work of Geoffrey Rayner and Richard Chamberlain, detailed in their book, Warhol: The Textiles (£30, Yale University Press) and seen in their companion exhibition of garments made in these textiles dating from 1954 to 1963. This is now showing at the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey, London, until 10th September, and will then move to other UK venues. I grew up in Holywood, just outside Belfast, and I've been interested in art and antiques since childhood. We used to pay regular Sunday visits to an elderly family friend whose house was hung floor to ceiling with paintings, and had cupboards full of silver and jewellery. Another early influence was my nana. We went on day trips to the picturesque village of Greyabbey on Strangford Lough to browse the antiques shops there. We rarely came home empty-handed. THE ANTIQUES THAT SHAPED ME What sparked your interest in antiques? For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by objects that looked, for want of a better expression, ‘worn out'. I was excited about the possibility of buying them and fixing them. FEET FIRST Claw-footed furniture came to Europe via China in the 1700s – the emblem is a familiar symbol in Chinese mythology. In Mary Poppins (1934) and, later, Disney's film adaptation, a bird woman sells bags of crumbs on the steps of St Paul's. It's an evocative image. But, 110 years ago, you were as likely to buy a ‘penny' toy as a bag of pigeon food. For enterprising pedlars (also known as ‘gutter merchants') congregated in the streets surrounding the cathedral, selling a wide variety of cheap toys. In the years preceding the First World War, Germany exported numerous toys to Britain, Europe and America. Historically, the Bavarian town of Nuremberg was a centre for toy making. The great companies of Bing (in Nuremberg) and Märklin (in Baden-Württemberg) made magnificent working toys of ingenuity and quality (especially trains and ships) for the children of the middle and upper classes. As a jewellery specialist at an auction house, I feel privileged to handle some really stunning jewellery and precious stones. But choosing jewellery to wear is a very personal thing, and I keep coming back to these Scandinavian 20th-century designers, who worked mainly in silver. The most famous is probably Georg Jensen from Denmark. He was influenced by the Scandinavian equivalent of the Arts and Crafts movement which was called Skønvirke, meaning ‘Beautiful Work'. Georg Jensen used lots of natural shapes, but in a very simplified form. After he died in the 1930s, the firm continued making silverware and jewellery. When I was working as a junior cataloguer, the first piece that got me interested in Scandinavian silver was a little Georg Jensen brooch known as the ‘amoeba', designed by…

What to Buy Now As a nation of pet lovers, we Brits like nothing more than immortalising man's best friend in paintings, drawings and prints. Sworders' annual Sporting Art, Wildlife & Dogs sale usually includes a healthy selection of dog portraiture, which can make anything from £150 up to several thousand pounds, depending on quality, rarity and collectability of the artist. One very affordable name to look out for is Herbert Thomas Dicksee (1862–1942), who captured animals so beautifully in his etchings and mezzotints, as exemplified by The Closed Door (bottom right), which sold for £390 recently at Sworders (Dicksee's prints rarely go above £500 in the current market). What to Sell Now Move over Harry Potter, first editions of The Hobbit are just as prized by international collectors. First editions of Professor JRR Tolkien's debut work, written in the 1930s while he was an Oxford don teaching Old and Middle English, are a rarity but do surface from time to time. Not long ago, we sold a first edition that had been found on a routine valuation of the owners' house in Dorset; they were flabbergasted when the book, with its tatty dust jacket, went to an American buyer for just under £60,000. Pop-ups have long been popular as a creative approach to building brand awareness or launching a business in the worlds of fashion, food and art. These one-off, temporary events, often staged in unexpected places, were inspired in part by the Tupperware parties of the 1950s (which continue to this day), at which punters could see products in action before committing to buy. In recent years, more and more antiques and vintage dealers have embraced the concept, and taken to opening up their homes to better display and sell their wares. Kitchens, sitting rooms, hallways, conservatories and gardens are briefly transformed into stylishly curated showcases for an often eclectic mix of stock. There's more than a touch of serendipity in Sarah Jempson's life. Woven wonder Estimate £12,000–£18,000 Sold £63,300 There's something about antique textiles that's irresistible – their hand-crafted nature, motifs, designs and raw materials make for a heady blend. Beguiled, dealer Peta Smyth devoted nearly half a century to buying and selling top-quality examples to collectors and interior designers from her Pimlico shop. But, a few months ago she retired, consigning the last of her stock and some pieces from her personal collection to Bonhams. The 181 lots included curtain pelmets, tassels and fringes, crewelwork curtains, needlework pictures and lengths of embroidered silk, plus French and Flemish tapestries. Travel A corn-sized 10 years ago, London Art Week has since grown into a great oak of the art world calendar, with over 50 dealers taking part this year, including, for the first time, dealers in exceptional decorative arts and rare books. ‘It's a wonderfully collegial event and includes both long-established galleries and emerging dealers, who put on special exhibitions just for LAW,' says event chairman, art dealer Stephen Ongpin. This year's participants are to be found in the elegant locations of Mayfair, St James's, Kensington, Chelsea and Pimlico.
