Ram-Tough Elephants EFI Crate Hemi to Appear in Trucks? Since we discovered that the recently re-released 426 Chrysler Hemi was undergoing emissions certification by the California Air Research Board (CARB) (Roddin’, June ’98), we have learned more about what’s going on with Mother Mopar’s pet elephant. It seems that this engine is not destined for Chrysler’s new ponycar contender, due in 2001, as we insinuated. Sources have confirmed that the Hemi may in fact be a special limited-option package in the truck line, or perhaps a Mopar Performance drop-in offering designed with the Ram truck in mind. Clearly the package will not be cheap, but with all the racing that Chrysler trucks are doing these days (NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, NHRA Pro Truck), high-profile marketing tie-ins are almost certain. Mattel’s new Legends to Life series is simply awesome, and the first piece, the Snake Funny Car, will give you goose bumps. Press the start button and watch the fun: the body comes up, the engine rumbles as the blower belt turns, the wheels spin, the headers light up, the Christmas tree lights go down, and Snake carries the wheels through the 60-foot, while a soundtrack replete with the Lions Dragway announcer and fierce engine and tire sounds completes the fantasy. This Month July 4-5. Early July brings you more Project Pony. Co-hosts Joe Elmore and Chuck Hanson will install new pulleys and a chip on their 5.0L Mustang LX project car before testing it on the HOT ROD shop Dynojet. Switching to hot rods of the ’90s, they’ll begin a buildup of the popular late-model Chevy Impala SS. The first step will be to install a new ignition system and underdrive pulley set. The show will also visit a powder-coating and chrome-plating facility, where work is under way on the HOT ROD TV ’32 highboy. The street car will be assembled later in the HOT ROD shop. July 11-12. Airflow tends to seek the shortest distance between two points. If you visualize airflow as a fluid, it’s easier to understand the changes in energy it undergoes as a function of velocity. We will use these statements as the basis for our examination of the characteristics of street and race engine intake manifolds. The Premise The intake manifold distributes air or air/fuel mixtures to the individual cylinders under varying engine speeds, loads, and environmental conditions. Whether the working flow is pure air, air/fuel, or air/fuel and other substances—such as nitrous oxide—the intake manifold plays host to a dynamic system of energy fraught with complexity and compromise. Ideally, an intake manifold should accommodate an engine as if each cylinder were an engine unto itself, because the goal is to maximize power…

I don’t like to run race gas, and I don’t like to take all the timing out of the engine because that hurts not only performance but mileage, too. What would you suggest? How many times have you let unbridled enthusiasm get in the way of common sense, dismissing concern with a quick “Oh, it’ll be OK”? If you think there is a problem, there probably is. Recently, just such a situation arose with the driveshaft in a street-driven Hemi Dart. As we were installing the new rear universal joint, we noticed that three of the four retaining clips were of the same thickness, while the fourth was nearly twice as thick. Despite misgivings, we installed all four, figuring that the mismatched clip wouldn’t have any significant effect. In the following weeks, we drove the car on the street without incident. It’s an original 351W/four-speed car from Oklahoma that he has beefed up with Edelbrock heads and intake, a rumpity cam, roller rockers, Hooker headers, a 2½-inch exhaust, a Hurst shifter, traction bars, and a Nitrous Works 125-horse dose of laughing gas. The Demonics The Demonics Man’s Ruin Records Image isn’t everything. Sooner or later you have to match the swagger with substance—just ask Fiat, Brian Bosworth, or Milli Vanilli. So we approach this Demonics vinyl 45 with caution. Sure, it has a Day-Glo monster, smokin’ flames, and a checkered flag. Sure, it’s pressed on translucent yellow vinyl with the record label’s evil feline logo painted on the A-side and a picture of Old Scratch himself on the flip. Until the first HOT ROD Magazine World’s Fastest Street Cars drag racing event at Moroso Motorsports Park, no one in the Pro Street racing mainstream knew of Bob Rieger (San Jose, California) or his car, and with good reason: neither had ever been in a real drag race. But in his first race in a professional class, Rieger set both ends of the Pro Street record (7.134/195.01 mph), put a holeshot on the defending world champion, and went all the way to the final round before he lost to another world champion. Loyal HOT ROD readers will remember Dave Rentsman and his bad-to-the-blown ’41 Willys. The sight of his red gasser-like road warrior thundering next to Jack Chisenhall’s 220-mph ’53 Studebaker during Power Tour 1996 was what it’s all about. Rentsman and his Willys parted company soon after its last 11-second pass down Norwalk’s (Ohio) quarter, and he took the following year off. But Rentsman was hooked, and it didn’t take a line of sweet talk to reel him into another Power Tour project. “Edelbrock’s Jim Losee and HOT ROD’s Ro McGonegal were the ones who really got me started,” he recalls. I am lucky enough to live a few miles from Troy’s shop, and I was able to watch Sniper go from a pile of tubing, a wrecked Viper, and a ’54 Savoy shell to the supercar that it is today. I asked Troy the same question Michael asks and was told that building wood bucks to form a body can easily run $50,000. And, as most professional builders are paid by the hour no matter what kind of work they’re doing, it’s in the best interest of their clients to start out with the best donor vehicle they can find.
