Gearhead is a zine dedicated to old cars and punk music. The first ten issues were released with vinyl singles included, and this CD compiles them. It’s made up, in large part, of contemporary bands doing their versions of songs by old school punk bands like the Rezillos and UK Subs. Inside the CD case is a photo (I’m guessing circa early-’70s) of a little kid balancing die-cast models on his forearms. The cars are the most wild, exaggerated creations imaginable, and the kid has a great big smile on his face… and that’s exactly what this music’s about. These bands are reliving their adolescence, or in some cases paying tribute to an era they were too young to have lived through. It’s not hard to see the similarities between…

Though import car drag racing is getting hotter every month, most traditional hot rodders grumble about the lack of American-built iron. Joe Morgan (“Poisonous Pinto,” Apr. ’99) has teamed up with K&N and Ford Motor Company to tilt the balance back in our favor. Currently nearing completion, Morgan’s alcohol-burning vengeance is a 2000 Focus wagon with 600 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, and the potential for 8-second performance from a turbocharged 2.3L. The goal, as Joe puts it, is to “embarrass the Hondas, Mazdas, and Toyotas that currently hold down the top positions in the IDRC (International Drag Racing Circuit), IDRA (Import Drag Racing Association), and NIRA (National Import Racing Association) events." The increasing popularity of retrofitting electronic fuel-injection systems to older vehicles has created a steady stream of hardware, making these conversions simpler. From harness kits to programmable controllers to turnkey EFI engine packages, adding modern engine management to vintage tin has gradually become less of a black art and more of a bolt-on. Despite these strides, there remains a gray area, still largely uncharted: the fuel system. No matter how simple the EFI package you plan to install, you will still have to outfit your pre-EFI vehicle with a high-pressure fuel system, one that includes an electric pump, a pressure regulator, and a return line, all capable of generating and containing upwards of 70 psi. You are likely wondering how emissions controls got such a bad name in the first place. The reality is that the early systems weren’t very good and often made the engine act like a psychotic infected with tuberculosis and St. Vitus dance. Remember, though, the first automatic transmissions didn’t work very well, either, but through continued development, they are now close to bulletproof. Benz Blitzer Anyone can drop a Chevy mill into a Mercedes and run with it. To hop up a Mercedes mill is something else altogether. Dig Axel Reinert’s ’64 Benz 220SEB, with the aluminum SOHC 6.3L engine. Thirty years ago, every American dude of draft age—approximately 18 to 28—was sure to receive a letter from the Selective Service Board that began with “Greetings” and ended with “Report to your draft board for a pre-induction physical on such and such a date.” I got mine in 1958. If you’ve been considering a swap to EFI or even a complete late-model engine upgrade, you’re in luck. The aftermarket has responded to the growing popularity of these swaps by developing parts and pieces—in individual, kit, and package form—to make these operations less daunting for the do-it-yourselfer. If you’ve ever attempted to weed through a factory wiring harness, sifting out the leads that are pertinent when installing an EFI-equipped engine in another application, you know how difficult and confusing the task can be. However, in a specific aftermarket harness intended for swaps, the extraneous leads are deleted and those remaining are usually labeled. ’Glide to the Side I am very interested in the article “Over and Under” in the August 2000 issue of HOT ROD. My wife has a ’67 RS Camaro convertible with a two-speed Powerglide, and I am considering the same swap you performed in your article. Thanks to hydraulic lifter technology and advances in camshaft design, the once-universal practice of “running the valves” to establish proper running clearance between the valve tip and rocker arm is no longer second nature to many hot rodders. Although Detroit no longer uses solid lifter camshafts, they are still unsurpassed when it comes to translating cam lobe profiles into valve movement in high-rpm applications. While hydraulic lifters (or tappets) operate at zero lash and have a built-in plunger that compensates tor normal wear, solid lifters are just that, solid, and must run with a prescribed lash value to provide enough operating clearance to allow for expansion and contraction.
