EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the second part of the article on tuning carburetors, written by Mr. Wallach. The first part of the article, which appeared in the September, 1949 issue of HRM, covered the following: effect of venturi, valve timing effects, calculation of venturi size, correct size carburetor, tuning the carburetor, troubles not due to carburetion, and manifold design. This section of the article is concerned with manifold and venturi considerations of the single-cylinder, four-cylinder, six-cylinder, eight-cylinder in-line and V-8 engines, along with a discussion of advantages and disadvantages of different types of manifolding arrangements.
On all multiple manifold installations, the use of a balance tube between the manifolds is necessary to dampen pulsations and make the engine idle better. Balance tubes are usually made of ¿-inch copper.
