Frame ends of the lower control arms are clamped to short shafts that pivot in bearings in the frame brackets. Clamped to the opposite end of each shaft, inside the frame, is a shorter arm that is approximately vertical when the frame and axle are in their normal positions in relation to each other. However, anyone who would bet that ninety-nine percent of the fellows in this group don’t know how to accurately check the valve timing of their engines would have an excellent chance of taking home the loot. The purpose of checking valve timing is to determine whether the camshaft is installed in its correct relationship with the crankshaft. After mnch rumour, counter-rumour and strong denials from Aston Martin the car now officially exists. It has at last made its debut in racing, and a very good one too, so good in fact that it surprised Aston Martin — with the possible exception of the firm’s racing director John Wyer, who really fathered the design. 750 cars of all types and descriptions are slated to take part in this year’s National Championship Drag Races, representing the finest quarter-mile acceleration equipment in the world. They’ll be running five days and two nights (Sept. 3–7) at the brand new Detroit Dragway, competing for honors in 34 class divisions. Dragsters, roadsters, coupes, sedans, pickups and sports cars all will be out in force, coming from all parts of the country. One of the major challenges at any year’s Nationals is that of trying to get one’s car through Inspection without having a single criticism chalked against it. California, Denny Carrisosa’s pit crew watched him make the quarter-mile in 12 seconds flat, at a speed of no mph. to win the Carrisosa family’s 160th trophy.
