I saw karting arrive. It landed hard with both feet July 10th at the Go Kart track in Irwindale. California, on the final day of the three-day National blast. Their ear-splitting entrance on this second anniversary of organized interstate competition climaxed stage two of the Go Kart Club of America's amazing flight into popularity by magnetizing hundreds of contenders from every region of the Union for a pitched battle unmatched in racing history. Up in the New England area, there is a group called the Orientals, of Reading, Massachusetts, which is rapidly making its presence known to everyone. The police know the club is around, not by unfriendly contacts on city streets, but through congenial meetings where the club displays its accomplishments and the law enforcement agencies respond with suggestions oh how the club may continue to do such a good job for the community. The civic leaders know the Orientals are around because the club is under the advisorship of the local Kiwanis service group. One of the most successful gatherings between the two organizations was accomplished recently when the car club set up a banquet for their parents, members of the Kiwanis Club and honorary members of the Orientals. The thing that makes the Pikes Peak Hill Climb so interesting is the fact that it is completely unlike any other race held M in this country or perhaps the world. Everything about it is unusual: the race starts above 9000 feet elevation and ends just over the 14.000 foot mark; practice sessions start at the pre-dawn time of 5 a.m. and are all over by 8 o'clock when a good many people are just having their first morning cup of coffee; and, the race scheduled for July 4th each year goes on that day regardless of weather conditions. DRAGS When we say that the 1960 National Championship Drags at Detroit are going to be the biggest ever, we aren't just whistling. The NHRA office is still reeling from a tremendous deluge of letters concerning the annual drag event, now conducted in conjunction with the National Champion Custom Car Show, the greatest car show in the nation.
