For years now, any number of mounting, repairing and customizing jobs have been done by using nuts and bolts, or sheet metal screws, or by welding. There is still another fastening method which has been, until recently, practically unused by car enthusiasts. This is blind riveting. Although the average guy perhaps doesn’t know a lot about blind riveting, the car manufacturers and big body shops do, because Pop blind rivets have been standard equipment in many domestic and foreign cars for a number of years. The manufacturers use them because they hold well, don’t vibrate loose, can be set from one side of the work, and because with various pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric setting tools they can be installed at high speeds. When things began to get a little dull, NHRA B/Altered drag record holder Paul Horning got together with sponsor Ernie Murashigue and built a new warhorse. The Cal Automotive fiberglass’32 Bantam roadster was selected for a body in order to hold class. Fruehauf Yellow paint was applied by San Gabriel’s Nori Morita at Custom Auto and Truck. The spaceframe design uses 2-inch main rails and roll bar with 1-inch reinforcing struts. Wheelbase is 961/2 inches with rear tread of solidly mounted 4-86:1 rear end narrowed to 43 inches. Many Detroit auto manufacturers now have several years of participation behind them in the hot rodding sport, particularly in drag racing, so it follows that some of them would eventually become involved in the marine field, taking part in hot boat activities. The day came this fall when Ford Motor Co. announced installation of the Holman-Moody “Fordland” in Long Beach, California, where Ford mills are being built for marine use. Out on route 395, about sixteen miles from Riverside, California, in what geographers call dry country, is the town of Perris. Some three miles eastward is an artificial lake called SkiLand, and here, in the midst of aridity, the National Drag Boat Association Fuel and Gas Championship was held. My first view of the course, which is shaped like a long obtuse angle, was barely at nine a.m. on Saturday morning, but already a long line of contestants was waiting at the launch ramp to get their boats into the water. Chapter’ One of the Bonneville Stoi’y for 1964 began with characteristic enthusiasm on August 23 when one of the 167 Bonneville Nationals entrants made the meet’s first run through J. Otto Crocker’s timing lights. It ended dismally a day earlier than the scheduled August 29 when strong winds made further runs unsafe. Chapter Two began September 1, when Harley-Davidson and the Stormy Mangham crew moved in with their streamlined motorcycles, and ended September 5 when the group quit the salt with one record but far short of their ultimate goals because of wet and slippery course conditions. Chapter Three began Saturday, September 26, when Walt Arfons and Tom Green moved into Wendover, Utah, which is the headquarters for Bonneville events, with their jet-powered Wingfoot Express. Oklahoma “hot dogs” lead-footed it all the way to clearly dominate the 1964 International Micro Midget Championship Races which were held at the Phillips’66’ Speedway in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Micro midget drivers from eighteen states put on their best racing show to date, despite a bit of miserable rain and mud conditions which resulted in some uneasy situations, especially in the turns. Competition was rough and exciting; hard-charging participants included four different champions from past Internationals, as well as other drivers who had been U.S. or Region high points champions, National champions or State champions in the sport’s annual program of nationwide major events. Late last summer, the Allstate division of Sears, Roebuck and Company “assembled” a 1962 Chevy station wagon to begin what should eventually prove to be one of the most exhaustive test beds of new and rebuilt automotive equipment. The term assembled is the most descriptive since the car was equipped with virtually everything marketed by Sears under-the Allstate automotive parts and accessories label: engine, battery, special 6-ply-rated station wagon Allstate tires, and even a set of their-smartly-styled custom wheels, to name only a few items. Although the car was of’62 vintage, the engine was a’58 283, pulled off of Allstate’s Los Angeles assembly line at random.
