Buried deep in the pages of NHRA’s new rules book for ’66 is a bombshell. This figure, when compared with the 1960 count, some 11,000 units, has prompted a projected estimate which indicates that by 1970 the production reports will read at 70,000. TIMES TABLE? Dear Sirs: I have never written you a letter before in the three years I have been taking* your fine magazine. One question, though: In the December ’65 issue, on the second line of “Tiger … Here’s Your Meat,” it states that Harley-Da-vidson’s race version is 15 cubic inches or 250cc. Vic Edelbrock and the Chevy V8 are a pair known well in racing circles. Both respond exceptionally well to soup-up provocations, and each, when placed in the proximity of the other, displays an increased state of performance. Recently, Vic, together with Chevy engine-builder Bob Joehnck of Santa Barbara, California, clamped half a dozen intake manifold/carbure-tor combinations on a “blueprinted” 327-inch stovebolt and uncovered some data that should delight owners of late or early bent-eight Chevy engine equipment. Vic and Bob cranked out ten separate tests on Vic’s Clayton 700 dyno and recorded sufficient amounts of the various engineering goodies so that a quick glance at the tabulated results should relieve much of the financial burden fashioned by “guesstimation” when performance bolt-ons are under consideration. Chevrolet owners with the Rochester fuel injection systems I have encountered their share of trouble over the years in U getting these units serviced. Difficulties even come in trying to diagnose the various operating ailments that crop up from time to time. AMA track champ George Roeder shinnied into Texan Stormy Mang-ham’s two-wheel streamliner immediately following Bill Martin’s Bonneville success with an RD-56 Yamaha factory racer-powered streamliner and bumped Bill from the top spot in this popular class. George Roeder’s new world marks, 176.817 mph average for the mile and 177.225 mph average for the kilometer, were made under USAC timing and American Motorcycle Association sanction. Dear Don: I’d like to trouble you about a couple of questions that have been bothering me. I have an SK boat with a warmed-up ’64 Buick engine in it and use it to kick around the local lakes. Like I’m trying to figure out what the prop slippage should normally be and how it is figured. My way of figuring shows that either I can’t figure or my aquameter is haywire, as I get slippage in the neighborhood of 30%. According to my tach, I’m off like the wind, but I end up at sailboat speed. Any suggestions would sure be appreciated.
