Sunburst Nassau, the festive, touristsaturated capital of the Bahamas Archipelago, is also the annual locale of an international sports car race. A few seasons ago it was the unlikely site of a bizarre confrontation, for A. J. Foyt, the high priest of the oval tracts, had just won the 200-mile feature event, and was being candidly dissected by British driver Stirling Moss. Moss was openly disparaging Foyt's Yankee-style oval track sport by contrasting it to the rigors of European-derived road racing. The climactic stage came when Moss cajolingly queried Foyt if all the gear changing, double-clutching, braking and right-and left-hand turns of sports car competition weren't impossibly complex compared to the patented oval track mold of just spinning circles. I built, from the ground up, a 1963 Ford late model Sportsman which raced in this year's Permatex 300 and won the event, with Curtis Turner as the driver. San Diego, California The CAE Racing Products Super Modified, designed and built by Jim Culbert, set a new track record on the first time out at Wembley Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa. The CAE Special, driven by Carl Adams, has shattered track and race records throughout its current tour. In addition to winning a majority of all races entered (with record times), car is present holder of the Match Race Championship, which is defended monthly via a Challenger vs. Champion meet. The attendance and enthusiasm of spectators in South Africa and Australia is outstanding. At the first appearance of the CAE car in Johannesburg, over 5,000 fans were turned away at the gate, and in Sidney, Australia, the spectators numbered 40,000. Traditionally, tree stump pulling is a job for torque-makin' tractor-type equipment, but if you'll stretch your imagination a little, you can see how this concept can be applied to boat engines (SK pleasure boats in particular) ; relatively low rpm requirements, the need for an ample supply of torque, and a reasonably flat torque curve spread over a span of about 2500 rpm.
