We'd like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Sir Isaac Newton for helping us design the Chevrolet Vega. Actually, he didn't have much to do with the door handles or the ashtray. But we did use his principles of gravity to help us make our little car the great little car that it is. Vega has a low center of gravity. That is, it sits very low to the ground. It also has a wide stance. Altogether, that makes Vega a very stable little car. Out on the road it's able to cope very nicely with curves and crosswinds. The International Hot Rod Association officially kicked off its '72 racing season with its Winter Nationals at Lakeland International Raceway in Lakeland, Florida, on March 3, 4, 5 and 6. This was the first of seven IHRA National events scheduled for this year, and judging from the attendance and response from big name racers and manufacturers at the meet, Larry Carrier, the founder of IHRA, has a good thing going. The program began on Friday with time trials and qualifying. Although many Top Fuel and Funny Cars were on hand, most of the drivers waited until late in the day when the air cooled and traction improved before taking to the strip. Scottsdale, Arizona's Chauvin Emmons began rodding at the age of fourteen, when he acquired a motorcycle. Since that time he has built an A/Comp Coupe, a T Roadster, an A/Fuel dragster, an Indy Street Roadster and a rear-engine 'T' Roadster. Now, at the age of thirty-one, he has built the 1740-pound Bonneville Roadster shown here. The present car, which will run with a blower this year at the salt, is expected to run in excess of 250 mph. The plastic and aluminum-bodied '27 Roadster was completely handmade at Emmons' Dynamic Machine Shop in Scottsdale. Bob Bellmyer bought this '34 Chevy Coupe for $175, invested $3000 more and came up with the machine pictured here. The car, known 'round Tulsa as the “Enchantress,” was painted with four coats of Pearl White, trimmed in Lemon Yellow and topped with ten coats of clear lacquer. The sculptures were done in various Candy colors, while the fenders took gold inlay with Candy Plum trim. Paint and body work were handled by Johnny Young's in Owasso, Oklahoma. The Enchantress is motored by a 401 cubic-inch, blueprinted and balanced Buick engine, modified with dual AFBs and Accel dual-point ignition. Building a Pure Stocker for the '72 NHRA Stock Eliminator category can be both fun and profitable for the unseasoned racer. There are 32 classes from which to choose (16 stick shift and 16 automatic classes). Like Super Stock Eliminator or the old Stock Eliminator, picking the right car and engine combination for a particular class is the most important decision you'll have to make. NHRA classifies the cars according to weight and advertised horsepower. A new oil filter from STP, called the Double Filter, has already received favorable acceptance by both circle track racers and drag racing drivers. The STP folks have obviously done their homework, and the finished product is unlike other oil filters now on the market. The name Double Filter is actually a description of the way this unit operates. The outer filter material is a more or less conventional wrap design made from a synthetic mat material. It has a 25-micron filtering capability, which means it will catch large, engine-damaging sludge. Incoming oil passes over and through the outer wrap, and when oil is cold, a bypass valve in the bottom of the filter, set for 2 to 3 pounds pressure, allows thick oil to return immediately to the engine…

Getting the most performance from a set of headers is usually a matter of equalizing tube length, selecting tube diameter and finding the right collector length. However, on Pontiac V8 engines there's more to it than that. An additional trick is needed to extract the maximum horsepower from the engine. The problem lies in the fact that the cylinder heads have an internal heat riser passage connecting the two center exhaust ports on each cylinder head. These passages destroy the pressure wave resonance that is essential to peak performance from equal-length headers. Blocking these connecting passages, which also isolates the intake manifold from exhaust gas heat, can add 15 to 18 horsepower to these engines. Although blocking these passages is desirable from a maximum performance point of view, it must…

The demands of today's racing are tremendous. Admittedly, parts dependability is a primary factor in drag racing, but even more important is the driver. Good four-speed handlers are hard to come by, especially in a sub-10-second Pro Stocker. The name of the game is to make as much power as possible, hook it to the ground and keep the car under acceleration (for the measured 1320 feet) for as long as possible. Slow shifts do many things: They unload the chassis, cause the engine to see excessive rpm and, most important, eat up valuable time on the clocks. A couple of months back we took delivery of the stock Dodge Tradesman 100 long-wheelbase van that was destined to become the Hot Rod/Keystone Project Van. With its antiseptic refrigerator-white paint scheme and blackwall tires, it just sat there looking at us like a duckling waiting patiently to become a swan. And our assignment was to transform this cargo carrier into a customized vehicle that we would be proud to own. We started with a trick black and gold-flamed paint job, and then spent the better part of the next month having mechanical modifications performed at Chaffey College. 1 CARBURETOR HEIGHT TUNING Additional performance can frequently be obtained by “tuning” carburetor height above the intake manifold. This is done by varying the carburetor height 1/4-inch at a time until maximum performance is obtained, although it is usually useless to raise the carb more than a total of one inch. The easiest way to do this is by cutting spacers from 1/2-inch Masonite, using a carb gasket as a template. Use Masonite that is tempered on both sides and use a gasket between each spacer. An added benefit from using Masonite is that it does a good job in insulating the carb from manifold heat. 2 KILL SWITCH A separate quick-kill switch that shuts off both the engine and the electric fuel pump is a good idea. You've previously seen the work of Pomona, California, Battalion Fire Chief Dwaine Lindebaum in the pages of Hot Rod Magazine. But we couldn't resist coming back with a feature on this beauty, his '26 Ford Coupe. When Dwaine began this job, he had only a body, four fenders and running boards to work with. From this starting point he built a 99-inch-wheelbase '30 Ford-type frame, added an early 'A' suspension and '32 Ford beam front axle. Braking is handled by a '46 Ford system up front and a '50 Lincoln system in the rear. The steering came out of a '65 Ford Econoline. Got a huffer or an air conditioner fighting with the alternator for available space on top of the engine? Maybe you'd just like to clean up the top of the motor by moving that alternator down to the basement? Well, here's an idea. Illustrated is a small-block Chevy, but most other engines have an unused boss or two on the front (in this case, for the power steering pump) that can be used to attach a bracket for mounting an alternator. Alternator brackets are much easier to build than generator brackets, and the self-contained Delcotron has it all over a generator for performance. Mark Twain once stated that “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” So, too, is the case with the annual United States Fuel and Gas Championships in Bakersfield, California. A few years ago the meet was reported to be failing badly, as both spectator attendance and car entries were down, but the ’72 edition of this classic racer’s race proved itself to be very much alive and well. Prior to this year’s meet, the Famosa Drag Strip, a converted WW II B-29 landing area, received a much-needed facelift including a bunch of repaving and over 3000. feet of guardrail to replace the hay bales of previous years. The entry lists, however, looked like the Bakersfield of old. The dragster staging area was jammed as 75 diggers attempted to qualify…

The first of the streamliners is here—a full-bodied wedge-shaped dragster that will use aerodynamics to keep the car glued to the track rather than wings or lead weights. Designed by paint and lettering specialist Sir Nat, this new style of digger uses a Tom Hanna aluminium body and a rectangular chassis built by Roy Fjastad at Speed Products Engineering. The engine is a complete Keith Black Hemi using a.400-inch stroker crank for 473 cubes, Hedman Hedders and Enderle injectors. The clutch is a Schiefer unit coupled to a narrowed 3.90-ratio Chrysler rearend, Cragar wheels and Firestone tires. Stopping power is provided by Hurst-Airheart discs and a Simpson chute. The quest for more power is by no means limited to the hot rodder. Recently, the folks at our companion Petersen publication, Wheels Afield, asked for some assistance in selecting speed equipment for the 318 small block MoPar, which is popular in motor home vehicles. Since we have also received many requests for hop-up tips on the Dodge/Plymouth 318, we thought you'd be interested in the results. The vehicle chosen for the test was a '71 Dodge Van, complete with automatic trans and the normal range of accessories. All gasoline engines require an igniter to light the air/fuel mixture in the cylinders to produce horsepower. This device is the spark plug, and the system that works with it to produce the sparks, and the “brains” to control it, is called the ignition system. When you figure that all a spark plug has to do is ignite on each power stroke of the engine, the principle sounds simple. But as you read on, you will discover that the varying conditions inside the combustion chamber resulting from engine speed (rpm), load on the engine, temperature, etc., tend to complicate things. Since 1914, auto makers have used the Kettering (or inductive) ignitive system consisting of a battery, a transformer (coil), a cam-driven mechanical switch (breaker points), a distributor and spark plugs.…

A long time ago man developed lights to help him see better at night, but putting lights on an off-road vehicle is not quite that simple. Occasionally something comes along that is out of the ordinary and provides countless hours of fun. Hot Rod's VW trike is just that. Driving the unique vehicle around town produces stares of envy and endless curiosity from anyone seeing it. Given a safe place to try it, wheelies come so easy you begin to feel like Wild Bill Shrewsberry after only a few minutes. The trike was assembled for us by its manufacturer, Kel Manufacturing, in Anaheim, California. Their kit requires a VW engine and transaxle, along with rear wheels, tires and some minor miscellaneous pieces. IN THE BEGINNING The Hot Rod of the Month for the May 1948 issue was Bert Letner's red and white track and dry lakes roadster. Bert designed and built the speedster in his own shop, with the help of Ted Evans and Art Laney. Drivers included Art, Fred Luce and, later, Troy Ruttman. Ted and Bert designed the unusual twin spark plug heads for the flathead and dubbed them the ELCO Twins, after their names. The twin-plug idea (predating the Chrysler effort by some 20 years) promised better flame patterns and more complete combustion. The problem was with ignitions. owner: Larry Bothwell Portland, Oregon car: '29 Highboy Roadster Larry Bothwell's angry-looking highboy roadster, powered by a blown, injected 351 Cleveland hamster, is one of the Northwest's finest highway denizens, and it was built entirely by Larry in his Portland, Oregon, shop—Bothwell Automotive. Larry employed his ample metalworking and painting talents to produce an impeccable finish on his roadster. There are rotors in that 6.71, phony huffer fans, and the blower bolts to a homemade manifold and chums the mixture from a modified Hilborn two-door squirter. Ample horsepower finds its way to a big Ford four-speed and a narrowed '57 Ford rearend. Dave Etheridge solved the “ 'glass or steel” dilemma when he stumbled across a rough but promising '28 Ford Phaeton rusting away in Nevada, three years ago. The beautiful touring was meticulously rebuilt, down to the last cotterpin. A fresh 292-inch Chevy and three-speed send the ponies to a Chevy rearend. Stock springs, front and rear, were reworked to give a softer ride. A '68 VW bus donated its steering box, while the crisp wires are the popular 15-inch Buick Skylarks. Simplicity is the keynote of Dave's building theme, with great attention given to details. A foot-deep burgundy and black lacquer job is wrapped around a perfectly restored body that is completely free of plastic fillers and fiberglass. Since Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins’ Chevrolet Vega was the first to strike it rich with the new-concept, small-block Pro Stockers, everyone else who rolls to the line in the new mini racers will be accused of jumping on the Jenkins bandwagon. But that’s not quite the story. Jenkins just proved what Don Nicholson knew would work all the time. Actually, while “Dyno Don” thrashed about with his Maverick at the 1972 Winternationals, his psychedelic Pinto was being painted by George Cerney in Norco, California. Nicholson says he decided to make the switch for several reasons, most of which hinged around money. As he puts it, “I could build a competitive small-block engine for what it costs to repair the SOHC Ford I used last year.” Keeping his affiliation with Ford, Dyno…

Although the Best Appearing Car Award received by owner Mike Kuhl and driver Carl Olson at the '71 Nationals was well appreciated, a far more rewarding trophy was the one they received for winning Top Fuel at the '72 Winternationals. Their 225-inch-wheelbase Woody Gilmore chassis is powered by an early-model Dodge Hemi using Arias pistons, Donovan valves and rockers, Engle cam, Cirello magneto, Douglass headers, M/T rods, Cragar manifold and pulleys, Hilborn injectors, Larkin blower and a Velasco.375-inch stroker crank giving 436 cubes. Following the command “gentlemen, start your engines,” at the 1972 Indianapolis 500, a specially built Hurst/Olds convertible will guide the way for the 33 Championship cars. And after a couple of laps of pacing the super-quick race machines, the Hurst/Olds will enter the pits in plenty of time for the racers to have a clear shot at the 21/2-mile track when the green flag is waved. Ironically, the majority of spectators won't be watching the cars when the green waves this year. No matter that there's a shortage of money and the United States Auto Club lost its best sponsor at the beginning of the year, there will be more new cars at the 1972 Indianapolis 500 than has been seen in almost a decade. In general, some of the new things all teams will share in 1972 include the new four-pitstop rule, higher rollbars and much better aerodynamics. The four-pit-stop rule will mean that most of the front runners will go back to better-traction tires (or, as they are sometimes called, “gum ball” tires), because as long as they have to pit four times during a race, why not take on tires with fuel? MODIFIED SUPER STOCK Many people don't realize the massaging involved when building a Super Stock engine within allowable NHRA specs. There are many important areas to consider, such as maximum compression ratio using stock configuration pistons, minimum deck height, minimum allowable combustion chamber volume, head gasket thickness, etc. The idea is to use the correct specifications to your best advantage. In the case of pistons, OEM units usually don't allow an engine builder to take full advantage of maximum permissible compression ratio, due to the large valve reliefs normally associated with stock pistons. For this reason, many engine builders use aftermarket pistons machined with minimum area valve notches tailored to their specific engine/cam combination. Of course aftermarket piston manufacturers also make available many ring combinations that are more ideally suited…

Building a race engine is usually a matter of relying on a certain set of known values. The engine is to be used only in a preordained environment, at a given rpm range, and for a specific amount of time. A street-operated engine is more complex. There is usually a performance standard set forth, but the rpm range can't be forecast, and the length of operating time can range from five minutes to five hours.
