There are many approaches to individual van customizing, from mild to wild. Few renderings, however, can surpass, in flavor and originality, the far-out uniqueness of Al Domingo’s VW bubble-topped, revamped ’71 Ford Econoline.
This bug-topped creation is the brainchild of Al’s buddy, Coke Reynolds, who was instrumental in its fabrication, which was undertaken with Al’s assistance. Coke, who originally held title to the van, obtained a ’59 Volkswagen sunroof top from a neighboring Central Falls, Rhode Island, junkyard and then proceeded to formulate a workable assembly procedure for installing the VW top. It was cut from the bug body a few inches below the window area, with the aid of an acetylene torch.
