"OLD FARMHOUSES COME IN MANY different styles. They range from small, rustic one-room houses to large, elegant plantation or manor houses. Plain and austere or ornamented with gingerbread, they were seldom designed by professional architects; instead they were built in true vernacular fashion by carpenters following age-old patterns and local styles, all the while adapting and evolving the designs to suit personal needs and tastes. Farmhouses have often been taken for granted or underappreciated because of their very commonness. But today, farmhouses are being restored by people who [want to] recapture the original spirit and character of the house while avoiding incongruous elements.
