I LOVE TO TRAVEL. I often return home a little airport weary but always feel richer from the experience of another place. Invariably, I collect things on the road: a footed ceramic bowl I picked up in a shop in Tuscany, a striped tablecloth I found in a Marrakesh market, a little chartreuse crystal vase I couldn't take my eyes off in northeast France—they all now decorate my rooms with memories. But it's often the experiences of other lives and homes that are the real treasures. I have a vivid memory of dining with a family on colorful, woven-plastic mats laid out on the flat rooftop of their house near Aswan, Egypt. GLOBAL STYLE ITALY The barrel-vault ceiling creates a cozy, intimate atmosphere in the living room of designer Patrick Gallagher's apartment in Rome's Palazzo Taverna. FRANCE When William Christie bought his 16th-century house in France, the grounds were a ruin. He created eight symmetrical parterres and used garden elements to restore a sense of balance. The square planters, inspired by Chinese fretwork, were constructed by a local carpenter and painted in the blue-green color frequently seen in 17th-century garden prints. LEFT: Color and pattern are not confined to the fabrics— they reappear on the walls and even the ceiling, painted in a glorious trompe l'oeil by François Roux. This dish will change your life—or at least the way you entertain. It's simply a twice-baked cheese soufflé with tomato sauce—a soufflé that can be mostly prepared ahead of time. DEIRDRE DOHERTY: I'd call it 'Spanish Revival meets industrial retro.' This is one of those great old Spanish-style houses, built in 1921, but the bathroom had gone through a remodel that did not fit the genre. I wanted to do something that felt as if it could have been here forever—but with a little edge. That explains the steel, but I've never seen it used quite like this. We had to build an enclosure because the client wanted a steam shower, and the design was inspired by factory windows.
