I RECENTLY WENT ONLINE looking for patio furniture and found a fantastic sale. But then, rather than make such a sizable purchase sight unseen, I decided to play it safe and go check out the samples in the company's local store. I may have started on my iPad, but I ended up buying in person. I switched fabric colors, because computer screens are rarely accurate enough to make precise color choices. ALEX HITZ I fell in love with flavor at an early age in France, where I traveled often with my parents. In the 1970s, nothing there tasted like it did in America. The tomatoes, the peaches, the asparagus, the eggs—everything was so different, so vivid, so much itself. This soup is the closest thing I know to the French asparagus soup of my childhood, resplendent in a way that seemed exotic to me at the time: a simple combination of leeks, chicken stock, and cream.
