At first glance, nothing could seem more irrelevant to modern culture than the classic garden folly. Look more closely, however, and it's clear that both the spirit of follies and the impulses that led to their creation in the past are alive and well in this new millennium. Follies resist simple definition or categorization. They may be made of marble or thatch, shell or mirror, porcelain or woven living willow. Their forms mimic everything from tents to temples, and their styles have been influenced by cultures from ancient Greece to Asia. Some are classically beautiful, some grotesque; some are miniature in scale, others larger than many modern homes.
