every to-do list has persistent stragglers. My never-dones are the purchases I still need to make for our new home. This ought to be a fun task—it’s shopping, after all!—but my to-buy column hasn’t abated in a year. Lollygaggers include: a pair of stately standing lamps for the living room, fresh lampshades for the master, a shallow bookcase for Teddy’s room, and some reasonably priced picture lights to brighten a dim corner of the dining room. Maybe my online shopping is to blame. Who would you call if you discovered a trove of antique wallpaper? If you answered Waterhouse Wallhangings, which specializes in revamping lost patterns for today’s market, you’d be in good company. The New York School of Interior Design worked with Waterhouse when it decided to celebrate its centennial this year with a wallcovering line. Their common denominator: Inez Croom, a Mad Men–era decorator and NYSID student turned professor. Six of her wallpaper patterns (including Fresco Stripe and Growing Nasturtiums, pictured) are being re-created in new colorways chosen by NYSID students with help from House Beautiful editors. “We found Inez’s original collections in a condemned Florida warehouse,” says Lance Houpt, co-owner of Waterhouse. “She was a protégé of Dorothy Draper, so we’re ecstatic that her patterns are getting a new life.”…

NEXT WAVE “OUR ROOMS AREN’T OVERLY PRETTY,” says Louisa Pierce of design duo Pierce & Ward. “They’re a little dark, a little weird.” And that’s what makes them interesting. Pierce and Emily Ward met at a Manhattan speakeasy and bonded over a shared addiction to interiors; now, they’re household names for the Hollywood-Nashville creative set, with actress Brie Larson and musician/model Karen Elson as clients. KATHLEEN HACKETT: Four school-age children live in this New York City apartment. Who would have thought? CELERIE KEMBLE: They have wonderfully stylish parents, whose aesthetic is an ideal combination of assured and devil-may-care. They want their kids to live in a home that telegraphs what’s important to them: art, humor, playfulness, beauty, comfort, confidence. The intention is for this house to last a lifetime— and to get better with age. My colleague Caroline Irvin and I chose colors, textiles, and furnishings with a high degree of detail and patina. I loved peeking into the storied world of his clients—the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Oscar de la Renta—who had the taste and the wherewithal to carry out his imaginative schemes. My favorite: La Mortella, designed for Sir William Walton. He channeled water to flow downhill into a pool, where it erupts into a beautiful and exuberant plume.”…

Katie Ukrop thought she had her passion for pink in check. Then she met the interior designer Suellen Gregory. And before her family knew what hit them, the deep gray walls of their 19th-century townhouse in Richmond, Virginia, had turned a gleaming pastel pink. It seemed only fitting. Gregory explains her client’s rosy outlook this way: “If Katie has a sweater over her shoulders, it’s pink.
