THE HOUSE WAS FALLING APART. The yard, covered in weeds. Big Havisham energy. Incomprehensibly, the structure faced a side yard rather than the ocean view behind it. But when this Corona del Mar, California, home came on the market six years ago, architect Eric Olsen knew it was the one. Or, more precisely, that it could be. THE MAIN KITCHEN “There’s an Art Deco vibe throughout the whole house,” says Nussbaumer, “but I still wanted it to feel like a warehouse.” Unpolished concrete walls and exposed steel beams are juxtaposed with glossy surfaces, bold color, and antiques. TAKEN TOO LITERALLY, KITCHENS CAN BE SPARTAN, as functional as garages—and just as eye-catching. Not so in the homes of itinerant designer Michelle Nussbaumer. “I’ve held the line in maximalism for the last 30 years,” says the dynamo behind Ceylon et Cie, the 11,000-square-foot Dallas showroom. Nussbaumer stuck to a mantra—“Do things that are not trendy, things you actually respond to”—while outfitting the newly converted warehouse home she and her husband, Bernard, own in Dallas. FOUR TIMES A YEAR, NEW YORK decorator Garrow Kedigian leads a handful of very lucky clients on what might be described as the ultimate design field trip: a weekend-long shopping trip to the Paris flea markets. “I always make sure to pick the group carefully—you want people who are sophisticated enough to make the right decisions, and, of course, who are easy to influence,” laughs Kedigian, who’s been visiting the famous markets—known collectively as Les Puces de Saint-Ouen—since childhood.
