WITH ITS NEW ENGLAND CHARM AND EPIC OCEAN VIEWS, Maine’s Mount Desert Island tends to evoke rapturous devotion from visitors—especially regulars like Leandra Fremont-Smith. “It’s a magical place,” says the designer, who grew up summering in the nearby town of Bar Harbor. So when a couple contacted her about renovating their own ramshackle 120-year-old house just down the road in Northeast Harbor, she knew she had to help save it. Built by famed local architect Fred L.
