Air sealing a home makes temperature easier to regulate and renders climate-control efforts more effective. Certified contractors can assess where your home is the most “leaky,” or inefficient, and may suggest sealing the foundation or adding weather stripping too. I NEVER OWNED A PLANT until I moved to the Hudson Valley. However, one of the first things I did when I purchased a weekend house was build a vegetable garden, because isn’t that what one does in the country? When I moved here permanently years later, I remembered that first garden. After it was built, I found the teeniest corner that fit one bistro chair, where I could sit peacefully, listening to nothing and watching the plants grow. It was bliss. OUR LIVES LITERALLY REVOLVE AROUND THE SUN, BUT NEVER MORE THAN ON BALMY DAYS THAT beg for a dip in the pool or a round of lawn games. Just as essential as getting outside is having a shaded place of refuge from the heat—call it a pool house, pavilion, or cabana. The goal, says architect Stan Dixon, should be to “design a space that feels enclosed yet is full of light.” Screens, slats, big windows, and canopies allow a breeze to drift through and may offer some UV protection, but they won’t encumber a view of the action. Conserve Energy: Swap your lightbulbs. New energy efficiency standards will phase out the sale of incandescent bulbs by 2023—so get on the LED train. (They now come in dimmable soft white!) Cree Lighting, Feit Electric, and Philips offer straightforward swaps. Use the sun more strategically. “Think about which rooms have the most sunlight,” says New York designer Gala Magriñá—and then rearrange the furniture to take advantage of it. Also, make sure your windows are letting in as much natural light as possible; for starters, Margiñá suggests fixing any faulty shades and keeping the glass clean. IT’S LIKE STEPPING INTO ANOTHER WORLD. OVERLOOKING 65 ACRES OF PROTECTED wetlands, the secluded property where Don and Pam Schneider live with their Parson Russell terrier, Frankie, is at once lush and tranquil.
