Red and blue. The timeless color pairing has long bewitched designer Mark D. Sikes—and countless others before him. One particularly storied item in this colorway sparked a vision for his latest project in Kansas City: Imari porcelain. “It was a really big catalyst for the design,” says Sikes of the centuries-old Japanese ceramic tradition. “The deeper blues, the reds, there’s such a range of color.” Sikes sourced several Imari collections to display in the home, setting some up high (atop the dining room’s sideboard) and others low (along the Iksel wallpaper on the lower half of the powder room). WHEN YOUR NEIGHBORS INCLUDE SAN Francisco’s famous Painted Ladies, known by millennials as the Full House houses, the siren call of bold color is impossible to ignore. In steering the refresh of a 1900 Victorian down the road, Kelly Finley, principal of Joy Street Design, heard it loud and clear. “Our motto is no white kitchens,” says the designer, who splits her time between Oakland, California, and Atlanta. “Color is joy!
