Adam Mason Kerry and I have been renovating houses together since the late 1980s and we’ve gained a great deal of experience in energy-efficient and passive solar design. I’m technically orientated and Kerry did studies in the 1990s, through which we came across the ideas behind passive solar design. It made a lot of sense to us. What people don’t say can reveal a lot about them. Asked about his architectural interests, director Blair Smith of Blair Smith Architecture doesn’t mention preferred qualities of architectural space or form. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of establishing good relationships with his clients and facilitating their involvement in the design process. This story begins with a house made from apricot-hued brick on a quiet street in Brighton East, the unceded ancestral lands of the Boon Wurrung people. The house, designed in the mid-1960s by a family who would live there in one form or another for the next 50 years, was already beautifully specific. The floor plan, set out in roughly a reverse F-shape, captured parts of the garden to generate an entry court and patio that carefully connected the house to vegetation and light. More recently, the house has become a much-loved home for a new family. When the family’s members grew to six, however, the house needed to grow alongside them. Since James Walsh won the 2020 Australian Furniture Design Award, the spotlight has been shining brightly on his studio practice.
