The appointment of Yogi Adityanath, a Hindutva ideologue, as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh has raised many eyebrows in political circles. It shouldn’t have. Since they came to power in 2014, the BJP high command has shown a penchant for unconventional appointments of chief ministers, going against the usual caste/community matrices. India slipped a place in the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP’s) annual Human Development Index (HDI) in the UNDP’s latest report released on March 21. Partly developed by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, the HDI measures life expectancy, income per capita and education, dividing countries into four categories: very high human development, high, medium and low. India’s score places it in medium. The pace of India’s improvement does offer room for optimism. It’s been another topsy-turvy month for the executivejudiciary relationship. On the ides of March, newspapers reported that the executive and the judiciary had broken a year-long impasse on judicial appointments by agreeing to the executive’s right to reject a judicial appointment on grounds of national security. Right on cue, there was speculation about why the court had buckled. It didn’t help that the court failed to follow applicable precedent while reviewing the process of government formation in Goa, and suggested out-ofcourt mediation in the controversial and long-pending Ayodhya case.
