The successful April 21 test-firing of the Indo-Russian BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from an Indian warship is significant for several reasons. Indian warships can now strike targets deep inland with breathtaking accuracy. They can, for instance, precisely hit parked aircraft, demolish individual buildings and, yes, even pass the proverbial cruise missile test: fly a missile through the goalposts of a football field. The test from guided missile frigate INS Teg in the Bay of Bengal, which saw the missile hit its target on an island in the Nicobar chain, is significant for other reasons as well. The Malappuram Lok Sabha bypoll in Kerala shut the backdoor rather tight on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s attempt to gain a toehold in the state. Malappuram simply voted the way it always has, with P.K. Kunhalikutty of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) polling over 515, 000 votes and romping home with a margin of 171,000 votes. Four kilometres east of Saharanpur on the Dehradun road lies Sadak Dudhali, a village of 3,000 people, mostly Muslim. There is also a significant Dalit minority that lives in Sadak Dudhali. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hint that the government may bring in a legal framework to make doctors prescribe drugs by their generic names has kicked off a debate. Soon after, the Medical Council of India (MCI), the statutory body that regulates medical education and registers doctors, issued a notice to all doctors to prescribe drugs only by generic names. Generics are medicines whose patents have expired; they can be manufactured and sold by local pharma companies at a fraction of what patented drugs cost. Branded products comprise 90 per cent of the Rs 1 lakh crore Indian pharma market. There’s apparently a new endangered species in town. In 1973, the government launched Project Tiger to protect the big cat from almost certain extinction. Numbers had dropped below 2,000, and it seemed already too late to reverse the tide. But conservationists argued that if the tide could not be turned back, it could at least be stemmed. It may have saved Chandigarh city from being despoiled forever. On April 12, the Delhi High Court handed down a 169 page judgment setting aside clearances granted by Punjab to Tata Camelot, an overambitious highrise housing project that would have obliterated Chandigarh’s majestic northeastern skyline of the Lower Himalayas. The Rs 1,800 crore project was part of a 2007 deal between Tata Housing and a cooperative society of 90 Punjab politicians. Members included former deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, Chhattisgarh governor B.D.
