Sixty-two-year-old farmer G. Narayanappa used to find it impossible to eke out a living from his 2.5 acres of land in Melavoi, a village in Anantapuram district and the second driest area in India. Since 2015, though, after the farmer turned to zero-budget natural farming (ZBNF), his land has never been fallow. While mango is his main crop, Narayanappa now grows eight types of fruits, three varieties of millets, two oilseeds, nine different vegetables and six kinds of flowers (as short duration crops). How has your work in the technique of ikat progressed? Ikat is a highly specialised weaving technique and like all traditional art forms, is passed on from father to son. When I work with weavers, my input is design intervention and a clear idea of what I’d like the finished weave to look like. It’s the new mantra in Kerala’s Thrissur city. Literally translating to ‘Don’t, Bro’, Venda Bro is an anti-drug campaign initiated by the local police. The campaign employs flash mobs—sudden gatherings of people, usually orchestrated on social media—to encourage young people to stay away from drugs. The campaign began on October 2, when 30 well choreographed personnel of the Thrissur police staged the first flash mob performance at Shakthan bus terminal. At Bulgari Resort Bali’s open-walled Il Ristorante, Luca Fantin, sister concern of Chef Luca Fantin’s Michelin star flagship restaurant at Tokyo’s Bulgari Ginza Tower, dinner is best enjoyed with a view facing pretty little lanterns bobbing around in a pond. It’s a tropical paradise and the menu is a modern Mediterranean feast inspired by the environs and the local ingredients crafted by Fantin along with resident head chef Fabrizio Crocetta.
