I WAS AT THE GROCERY store recently and saw one of my former teachers. She seemed fairly old when I had her, but she was exactly the age then as I am now, which no longer seems that old. In her many years of teaching, she had close to 1,500 students, but she still remembered my name, even though it had been 40 years since I sat in her classroom. As we stood in the produce aisle, she recalled walking me down to the basement to the speech therapist’s office once a week so I could learn how to make the “r” sound. FOR A STATE WITHOUT a native wolf population, Indiana plays a surprisingly vital role in their study. Without that dark moment in history when alcohol was forbidden, we would not get to sip house-distilled cocktails at Repeal, the latest business to set up in Fletcher Place’s funky, white-stone Virginia Bank building. The threemonth-old watering hole pays homage to the era with cocktails made from the gin and vodka produced at its next-door distillery, 12.05 (named after the date Prohibition was repealed, December 5, 1933). Now in its 29th year, Coats for Kids has filled the gap for those in need by gathering donations of new and gently used coats and distributing them during an afternoon at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Gene Stratton-Porter (1863–1924) became one of America’s most cherished writers, selling an eyeball-bulging 50 million books. THE SAME DRAMATIC cliffs, plunging ravines, and tranquil forests that make McCormick’s Creek State Park (State Road 46 just east of Spencer, 812-829-2235, in.gov/dnr/parklake/2978.htm) one of Indiana’s most popular outdoor destinations helped inspire our state-park system a hundred years ago. In 1888, Indianapolis physician Frederick Denkewalter selected a pristine landscape 60 miles southwest of the city, in Owen County, as the setting for a relaxation “sanitarium.” When Dr. Denkewalter died, prominent conservationist Richard Lieber lobbied the state to purchase the property, and, in 1916, it became Indiana’s inaugural state park. Lieber, later the first director of what is now the Department of Natural Resources, eventually died there. How many times have you discussed urinary incontinence while having coffee with friends at Starbucks? Most women pretend it doesn’t exist. But the reality is urinary incontinence will affect approximately 50 percent of American women during their lifetimes. And it’s not just a problem for gray-haired grandmas. “Overall, when we look at women age 30 to 60, about 30 percent of those women will have some type of urinary leakage,” says Douglass S. Hale, M.D. “As people get over the age of 65, that number begins to reach the 50-to-60 percent range.” Hale is with Urogynecology Associates PC, which was the first board-accredited fellowship program in the nation to train doctors to care for patients with pelvic floor disorder, back in 1996. Even as a kid growing up in Lafayette, he got excited when his mother, who brought the family together over big Polish dinners and chop suey nights, asked him to make his own sandwiches for his school lunches. The affable avid skateboarder spent his adolescence playing in bands and majoring in film studies at Purdue University. The Indianapolis resident was in line at a food-truck festival in the fall of 2011 when he and his wife, Mo, struck up a conversation with the person in front of them, Tyler Wald. “Wouldn’t it be great to be in the foodtruck business?” they mused. BACK IN 1980, when we weren’t watching Three’s Company, 1.3 million of us were reading Lisa Birnbach’s The Official Preppy Handbook, published 35 years ago this month. It was the definitive compendium of all things upper-class, from what pastel print to wear to which private East Coast schools to attend to where you should “summer.” Country-club memberships were paramount, as were pink and green. The book cover, trimmed in plaid, displayed Mummy and Daddy, crossed tennis racquets, and a synopsis of guidelines including “How to Be Really Top Drawer.” I was this magazine’s managing editor at the time, and the editor-in-chief asked— nay, required—that I parrot the book, localizing the author’s directives. APRIL 4, 1968. Martin Luther King Jr. is killed in Memphis. Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy, in Indianapolis to address a mostly black crowd of 2,500, breaks the news of King’s assassination. He speaks briefly and from the heart, invoking his brother’s death and appealing for “love and compassion toward one another.” Riots ravage other cities, but Indy stays calm. That day affected a generation of local residents and is commemorated with the Landmark for Peace Memorial in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park on the near-north side, the site of Kennedy’s speech.
