WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, our town had two newspapers—The Danville Gazette and The Republican. Bob Pearcy was a Democrat and owned the Gazette. Betty Weesner was a Republican and owned The Republican. They were dear friends, having known one another since first grade, and when the press at the Gazette was down for repairs, Betty let Bob print his Democratic views on her Republican printer. When The Republican press was down, Bob returned the favor. Witnessing such collegiality as a child made it easy for me to switch parties when I married my liberal Methodist wife, who agreed to become a Quaker if I became a Democrat. WHAT’S UP, DOC? “Snoring is like a smoke detector, warning you of a potential fire”. Is snoring always a sign of sleep apnea? No. For instance, I’m a “benign” snorer. I’ve given myself a sleep study, and I don’t have sleep apnea. I just make some noise. I’m interested in what happens between the snores. When your breathing stops momentarily—that’s apnea. Significant sleep apneas affect between 5 and 8 percent of the adult population. How dangerous is it? It’s a significant independent risk factor for a variety of medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, and hypertension. WHAT’S UP, DOC? “Personally, I don’t take any of these medications or recommend them to my family members.” What have we learned lately about the aging brain? It’s very, very sensitive to the side effects of medication. Certain medications that we assumed were safe are actually, we’re discovering, not safe for your brain. They have adverse cognitive effects. Which medications? One class is anticholinergic agents, found in things like Benadryl and Paxil. Another is H2 antagonists, found in products such as Zantac and used to counter stomachache and heartburn. The third are benzodiazepines, a class of psychoactive drugs found in Ativan and Xanax, among others. Depending on how much cause and effect we can prove, we’re talking about facilitating or causing serious neurodegeneration. Should we stop taking these medications? The…

IN 2009, A STORY in the news broke Sue Dillon’s heart. Early in the morning on January 7, just a few miles from her home in Carmel, a man had walked out of his house and found a 15-year-old high-school student named Ziang Ke lying by the street. The boy was injured and in distress. As far as investigators could tell, Ziang, while running to catch his bus, had slipped on the ice and fallen under the vehicle, which ran him over. The driver, unable to see him, had pulled away in the darkness. Ziang lay there for close to 20 minutes before the man discovered him and called for help. The boy died at the hospital. Thanks to stents and better medicine, heart surgeons aren’t cutting open patients with blocked arteries as often as they used to, but they are replacing more aortas and valves. Dr. Art Coffey at IU Health Methodist performs one of these procedures about every 48 hours. Todd Lewis’s procedure began at 6:45 a.m. on one of the dog days of summer. The 46-yearold Carmelite should have been playing golf, or mowing his lawn, or climbing ladders at his construction job, but he couldn’t do those things without getting winded. OPEN THE HEAVY wooden doors at the Eiteljorg Museum, and you’ll walk through several galleries that could easily be named Things You Expect to See at a Native American and Western Museum. Paintings of tribal dances. Sculptures of cowboys and horses. Masks, blankets, and other artifacts. The surprise comes at the back of the second floor. WHAT’S UP, DOC? “We literally spray this new skin on.” Besides disfigurement, what problems can severe burns cause? Once you’ve injured your skin and received a skin graft, that skin is never “normal” again. It doesn’t have the same temperature regulation, sweating, sensitivity to the environment, or barrier to infection. All that is lost. It’s going to be much more sensitive to trauma. What are the newest developments? One of the things burn patients get, especially younger children, is a lot of itching and inflammation. They’re often on massive doses of anti-itch medication that makes them sleepy and has other side effects. AUGUST 2010 Paralyzed from the neck down, Leeuw checked into the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana. He could remain upright for therapy only for a few minutes before his blood pressure dropped. OCTOBER 2010 Leeuw could raise his fingers after two months at RHI. But despite making progress, he was forced to leave the hospital when his insurance ran out. DECEMBER 2010 Against doctor recommendations, Leeuw stayed at an Indianapolis nursing home for daily therapy—and took his first assisted steps. WHEN SHARON MOORE’S parents traveled to the States from England for the first time and ordered tea, they got a surprise. Instead of a steaming pot with milk, it came iced. Now Moore, a welltraveled Brit who first landed in Indianapolis in 1999 as a freelancer covering auto racing, is schooling locals on proper British tea customs at Tilly’s Tea Room.
