ONE SUNNY winter morning in 2015, Aimee Kandrac headed downtown to pitch her startup, WhatFriendsDo, to a couple of investors. Walking into an office in the Mile Square, she didn’t feel nervous. Rather, Kandrac was excited— eager to get feedback. Whenever she pitched an idea to a potential funder, she always made a point to note the number of women in the office. In this particular one, there weren’t any. Nevertheless, Kandrac tried to remain focused. Indy-area communities have been building trails nearly as fast as they can lay asphalt. But as government dollars dry up, swaths of disconnected and shovel-ready paths remain. Enter Cultural Trail mastermind Brian Payne of the Central Indiana Community Foundation. He has been meeting neighborhood leaders and wellheeled donors to raise $100 million in private funds for new trails. Payne wants to connect underserved areas to the Monon and other greenways. If all goes well, new trails could be built as soon as 2019. Here’s some more groundbreaking activity to look for. CrimeCon 2017, the world’s first convention for true-crime fans, brings fake murder scenes, serial-killer discussions, and O.J.’s lawyer, from June 9 to 11. F. As the crow flies, Central Indiana is pretty close to the origin of America’s urban and suburban greenway trend. But we followed a winding path before arriving at the trail-building boom Indianapolis and the surrounding counties have enjoyed in recent years. ¶ In 1963, May Theilgaard Watts, a schoolteacher in the Chicago suburbs, got things moving with a letter to the editor. Especially for an event that involves people spending a summer afternoon at a historic presidential home, attired in crisp white and playing a game largely associated with monocled aristocrats saying, “Good show!” (at least, that’s how we imagine it).
