TIME STAMP 1957 IT WAS THE early years of the Great Depression, and parents were struggling to make ends meet. So Fannie Caldwell Stewart, owner and publisher of the Indianapolis Recorder, and her son, Marcus C. Stewart, decided that the city’s African-American newspaper was going to throw a picnic for its carriers and their families. That August 1930 to-do proved newsworthy, at least in the black community. “Upward of 2,000 kids and 500 grown ups” att ended, according to a report in the Recorder. A band made up of orphans furnished the music, and there were “games of every conceivable description,” plus basketball, boxing, skating, and dancing, all surrounding the day’s showstopper: a yummy lunch. BLACK MARKET beverage director Chris Coy sees some similarities between his current position and his 1990s gig playing bass guitar for Indiana rock band the Pub Sigs. “Everything is collaborative,” Coy says. “Someone comes in with part of a song, everybody else has input, and we all finish it together.” Basically, he’s still riffing with the band, creating customer favorites at the bar and fashioning a wine list that has helped Black Market snag a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence every year since 2014. I’m around a lot of kids, most of whom seem prett y chipper to me, but I’m not dissecting them to study their emotional innards like he is. EARLY IN THE evening on February 3, a few hundred students, faculty, and alumni of St. Joseph’s College filed into an auditorium to learn the fate of one of the oldest schools in Indiana. Several months earlier, an accrediting organization had put the 128-year-old institution in Rensselaer on probation for failure to address its massive debt. She admits she doesn’t fit the hunter stereotype, but thinks most people have that wrong, anyway. “The biggest misconception of hunters is that they’re ignorant, or redneck, or uneducated,” says Haste. “Most hunters are respectful of the land on which they hunt, and of the animals themselves.
