THE TURN OF THE CENTURY was a pivotal era for the Indiana arts world—and for young painter and sketcher Helen McKay in particular. In 1902, Herron School of Art opened in the home of one of Indiana’s most famous painters, T.C. Steele. The 27-year-old McKay took a post as a teacher there, and before the year 1903 was rung in, she married Steele’s son, Rembrandt “Brandt” Steele, himself a well-known artist. Helen Steele, a graduate of Shortridge High School and the Art Institute of Chicago, painted, carved wood, did leather-workings, and designed stained-glass windows—a medium in which her husband excelled, too. After separately pursuing careers in fine jewelry (and arming themselves with gemology degrees), Mary Leppert and Samantha Hurst Larkins (above, left and right) came together a few years ago when Leppert brought Larkins’s line into the dearly departed G. Road Trip IN ITS FIRST FOUR years of cocktail-making, Bloomington distillery Cardinal Spirits has produced everything from a gentle 190.5-proof vodka to Indiana’s first craft single-malt whiskey, all starring in seriously creative drinks served at its own tasting room. When it came time to add food in the summer of 2017, the distillery didn’t call on just anyone. Enter Dean Wirkerman, the Austin-born chef whose résumé includes stints at Charlie Trotter’s and Thomas Keller’s New York outpost, Per Se. But since nearly the Civil War, a law prohibiting three-way liquor licenses in Irvington meant spirits fans had to go elsewhere for the hard stuff. Giant Tribal Mask When The Inferno Room co-owners Ed Rudisell and Chris Coy began dreaming about opening a tiki bar last year, they knew they wanted a huge, scary mask to greet visitors.
