WHAT’S A YEAR OF your life worth? For Kristine Bunch and 36 other exonerees in Indiana, it’s $50,000. Under a new law taking effect this month, Bunch, who spent 16 years in the Indiana Women’s Prison for a crime the state now says she didn’t commit, is entitled to restitution seven years after being released. Indiana had been one of 17 states with no restitution law, which meant that until now, the wrongly imprisoned had to win a lawsuit against the state—which takes years—to be compensated for their time behind bars. The new law was crafted during a surprisingly rancor-free bipartisan Statehouse debate. AS A KID during the 1980s, Josh Hickman was awash in mopeds. “Anytime I went to a garage sale and saw one—even if I only had a dollar’s change in my pocket—I’d ask how much it was,” Hickman recalls. “Often, people would say, ‘You want that piece of junk? SOMETIMES, IT’S a funky-looking “i” in the red Eli Lilly and Company logo that tips Mike Dalton off to fraud. Or an irregular dimple pattern on the tinfoil wrapper. Crooks who mass-produce counterfeit pharmaceuticals are creative and ambitious, peddling billions of dollars of fake drugs around the world. It’s Dalton’s job to stop them. His forensic lab at Lilly detects counterfeit medicines and works with law enforcement to bring criminals to justice. AFTER FOUR STRAIGHT record-setting years of homicides in Indianapolis, Reverend Charles Harrison was hardly in a mood to celebrate.
