And whoever does it should know how to configure all the receivers and speakers for a full “immersive” experience, according to Walt Zerbe of Fishers-based CEDIA, a trade group representing companies that integrate cutting-edge media technology into mansions around the world. THERE ISN’T a lot of space to wander around inside Holy Cross pizza shop Futuro. Not that this matters at the moment. A spiffy red-tiled counter greets you at the entrance, and in lieu of tables and chairs, bumper sticker–sized “WAIT HERE” signs on the buffed concrete floor instruct customers to stand six feet apart, doing that awkward coronavirus shuffle while they wait for their pies. Eventually, Futuro (among Indy’s 2021 class of restaurants that opened during a global pandemic) will set up some indoor seating, along with an upper-level dining room and new picnic tables beyond its two roll-up garage doors. NOW THAT IT’S MAY and spring has firmly arrived, I’ve returned to my garage and the contents therein, mostly yard equipment and motorcycles. Last fall, my sister and I sold our respective lawn mowers and went halves on a Kubota zero-turn mower. She and her husband live up the street from me, so the plan is for me to mow my yard, then ride to her house and mow theirs. I don’t know why more people don’t share mowers. The Indy Autonomous Challenge THE FUTURE IS NOW. The Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), the world’s first head-to-head, high-speed autonomous race, arrives at IMS this month to prepare for its turn on the bricks on October 23. A GREATER SPECTACLE. The IAC is a partnership between IMS and Energy Systems Network, an Indy-based advanced-energy nonprofit. The original idea was to pit different college programs against each other in developing a racecar that could complete 20 laps around the 2.5-mile IMS oval in under 25 minutes (no pit stops) for a $1 million prize. It looks expensive and seems flawless—a silken swath waiting for someone elegant and affluent to slip it on over the matching negligee that lies nearby. But its condition is not quite perfect, and even if it were, it’s certainly not destined for a trophy wife’s boudoir. Deep-fried: Contrary to popular belief, a quick dunk in a deep fryer actually makes a pork tenderloin retain less oil than other frying methods, and it ensures even browning and crispness. Pan-fried: A homier approach of frying with a modest amount of oil in a cast-iron skillet (the way your grandmother might have made her Sunday chicken) may make for a greasier tenderloin but often results in a craggier, more tender crust. VINTAGE: 1988 Resides at IU’s Eskenazi Museum of Art WHEN ACTRESS Glenn Close signed on to be the lead in the film Dangerous Liaisons, she knew the period piece about 18th-century France would involve elaborate and uncomfortable clothing. This dress, which was featured on the movie’s promotional posters, requires a corset and is so cumbersome that it takes two people to lift it. Close kept the costumes from all of her films, and she recently donated them to IU’s Sage Collection, which will exhibit them at IU’s art museum starting on May 6 (p. 54).
