Very few people look good in Lycra. The trick is not to care. Even the best riders once had to walk their bikes up tough hills. No shame in hoofing it. “On your left !” Every time. Pass someone struggling up a hill? Spare some breath for words of encouragement. You’ll see faster riders fly by, but hey—they’re missing out on beautiful fall foliage. QUITE A FEW years ago, two houses in my hometown of Danville came on the market, both of them built in the last half of the 1800s and shabby with age. One house was purchased by a neighbor, the other by a family from out of town. Each new owner went about renovating his property, though with markedly different approaches. The neighbor worked on one room at a time, making careful improvements until the house was returned to its former glory. It’s a lovely place, and whenever I walk past, I stop to admire it. The other home was razed to the foundation, and a new structure took its place—a sterile, featureless building that looks like a doctor’s office. DECADES AGO, a dream took root at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site: restore the gardens of the famous painter’s wife, Selma Steele, to their spectacular original condition. The city girl had embraced the couple’s bucolic Brown County homestead as her own creative outlet when they moved there in 1906. A trained artist steeped in Impressionism’s celebration of plein air painting and vivid colors, Selma brought a designer’s sensibility to the landscaping and planting of hillsides and meadows on the property. The result looked organic and even a bit wild—an Indiana answer to Monet’s French gardens (and a subject in some of T.C.’s work). Selma cultivated the project throughout her lifetime. OFF STATE ROAD 135 past Gnaw Bone, down Valley Branch Road, on the unpaved turnoff to eXplore Brown County, strange sounds start coming out of the woods. Motors whining. Tires grinding on gravel. Loud squeals and wild screaming. AT THE INDIANAPOLIS Museum of Art’s 133rd annual meeting this past May, CEO Charles Venable and his team had a lot to celebrate. The executives took turns at a podium in the Toby theater touting the institution’s recent accomplishments. Since 2014, museum memberships had doubled from 8,000 to 16,000. Curator Scott Stulen continued to delight visitors with quirky installations like artist-designed mini golf. A pair of 17th-century Japanese silk screens on stage represented the museum’s many acquisitions from the past year. Chris Smith’s journey of 10,000 miles began with a single snap—a team photo of the 1937 Versailles Frenchies basketball team, which included his dad. That picture inspired Smith, a commercial photographer by trade, to take his own photos of old gyms around Indiana. Smith enlisted his friend Michael E.
