The cult of the coloured concrete sink has been a long time coming. “We had blush-pink bowl sinks ready to go four years ago,” says Matt Di Costa, founder of concrete homewares and furniture company Nood Co. “I kept saying to my business partner, ‘This is going to be massive,’ and he was like, ‘Nah, mate.’” Laughing, he adds: “I said to him, ‘Just wait.’” And now here we are, with near endless opportunities to colour, mould and style concrete sinks for the bathroom, kitchen and laundry. The week after finishing her interior-design degree in 2013, Melbourne-born Tali Roth was on a plane to New York with her husband Marcus and just $3000 in the bank. “I had a few interviews when I arrived but didn’t get a single job offer. “We underestimated the wear and tear on our wooden floor” JEREMY BULL, ARCHITECT/OWNER “We installed a floating timber floor in the living area during the first renovation. Within a few years, however, the timber got trashed by the sunlight streaming in and all the foot traffic, not to mention the impact of four small children. And when we moved the table off it, there were these shining relics all over the ground where the table feet had been. So when we got to the last renovation, we’d already decided to put in the Carrara. Marble is much more hard-wearing and practical. soft focus Good-quality towels and bath mats can transform the room and your experience of it Bathrooms are necessarily waterproof and hard-edged, which is why the softness of towels and mats is so welcome. A gorgeous towel can also smarten the plainest bathroom. But while looks are important, absorbency is a must. Look for designs in properly absorbent fabrics that wick away water instead of brushing it off, and a bath mat that feels nice underfoot. Thicker towels are usually more absorbent but take a frustratingly long time to dry. Cotton is always more absorbent than polyester blends, and those made with rayon or Egyptian cotton are softest. THE ORIGINAL Infinito bookshelf, designed by Franco Albini in 1956/57 and produced by Cassina since 2008 The form An open bookshelf of wood, held in place by adjustable legs that are fitted between the floor and ceiling. What makes it special? Prior to Albini’s design, bookshelves generally had four legs that supported the shelves on the front and back edges. Infinito removed much of this leg clutter, reducing the structure to just two or three uprights (depending on the size chosen). This means the shelves genuinely float in free space, providing an airy, minimal look. With the impending arrival of their first child, Adam Harriden and his wife Fallon set out in search of their dream home. They wanted a place with land, space and clean, crisp sea air; a place in which they could spend their days together as a family, instead of in traffic to and from work in Sydney, where they lived. They discovered it in Doonan, a small community near Noosa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. However, the first impressions weren’t all favourable – the large 1980s cabin was on a completely overgrown piece of land riddled with bamboo and with a creek running through it, and came with a very dated colour scheme. “We loved the place’s uniqueness and chalet style, but what sealed it was looking out through a six-metre-high…

When one renovation door closes, another one opens – or at least it did for interior stylist Nita Hauhia and her partner Valtteri Vartiainen. The pair had just completed extensive renovations on their home, previously an old laundry, in the Finnish town of Porvoo, when they heard of an old ski factory in the countryside that had come onto the market. “It was pure madness to start thinking of another project immediately afterwards, but I’d dreamt of living in an old factory since I was a child, and we couldn’t stop thinking about it,” says Nita.
