the story so far This four-bedroom brick-veneer house was built in 1965. Joanne and Heinz bought it in late 2013 from the family of the man who built it when, at 97, he reluctantly moved into a nursing home. At the end of a Bayside cul-de-sac, the house is set on a 607sqm block and was described by the selling agent as a “well-preserved treasure”. “We love the generous, light-filled space,” says Joanne. “We’ve made a few changes, such as painting the kitchen cabinets white and polishing some of the floorboards, but everything else is pretty much as it was in the 1960s.” When the couple bought the house, they purchased a few pieces of furniture from the owners, too, including the master bedroom’s bedhead, complete with cassette deck. “While…

What inspired you to go into interior design and styling? I was inspired at a young age by my mother who loved restoring houses. I lived through various renovations and developed an eye for what I liked and how a building or room can be transformed. 1 sealing up Without sounding like I’m stating the obvious, properly sealing your home should be your very first step. Draughts and icy winds will turn a toasty warm home into a winter wonderland, so it’s vital to stop the breezes coming through. There are the obvious culprits such as underneath the door, open windows and air vents but we can sometimes overlook major leaks. Poorly sealed window frames, gaps between your flooring, exhaust fans, places where plumbing penetrates walls, around doors, chimneys, and in between your cladding… this list goes on. Listen and look for rattles and whistles during windy periods, movement in curtains, light through cracks and airflow around floorboards, doors and windows, then seal where appropriate. Seek professional advice from a builder before conducting any major work.…

Since his teenage years, Petrit Gratsis had always dreamt of a career in design. After years of owning a cafe, he decided to take the leap, changing careers to become an interior designer. Recently, he faced his ultimate design challenge: renovating the ground-floor apartment of the modernist duplex block he owns on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach. Upon buying the home in 2002, Petrit’s design eye instantly saw its huge potential. The deal: My kitchen is relatively small so the lighting is all about what’s most functional for its size. I have spotlights, which give off a great amount of light and don’t clutter an already limited space. The pros: I love the look of pendant lighting. Having it in the right location so the light is where you need it when cooking is the key to making it work. Ideally, pendant lighting would work well above preparation work surfaces with a shade to focus the light down, and hung just above head height. The cons: I find the light isn’t as good to cook in and, if they’re not in the right spot, it can be an annoyance. I would recommend good spotlights, which can be moved to where you…

WILD AT HEART Emerging garden designer Emmaline Bowman’s 25 square metre plot was carefully planned to give people a place to unwind but also to support local animals and insects. Using recycled timber from her family farm, local grey basalt and native plants including ‘Billy Buttons’ from Victoria’s western plains, her aim was to create an entire ecosystem. To this end, a vertical plant wall filters water for the pond, which is in turn created with different levels to support fish and frogs. Ceramic salad servers DESIGNER: Daisy Cooper After growing up in rural Scotland, a trip overseas led Daisy to create her own range of ceramics, inspired by the natural surrounds of both her childhood and life in Australia. Each piece is handmade in a Melbourne workshop in Brunswick East. “I’m always looking for colours, textures and shapes in nature,” says Daisy. “With these servers, I’ve kept the exterior raw to showcase the texture of the clay with a pocket of glazed colour, just like a geode.” Her design process always begins with a ball of clay, sourced in Australia, which is then pinched and slab-built into the shape she needs. The iconic Red Tulip chocolate factory, converted into apartments in the 1990s, had long been on this property collector’s radar and already housed a couple of his friends. When Dean’s ‘golden ticket’ moment finally arrived and an apartment came up for sale, the developer moved fast to make it his own. BUYER BEWARE! It’s prudent to get a building and pest inspection on any property you’re thinking about buying. But it’s not failsafe – they often come with myriad caveats if the inspector can’t get access to the sub floor or roof cavities for example. And remember that pre purchase inspectors and pest inspectors are not licensed by the government (except in Queensland) and therefore standards can vary significantly. If it’s cheap, you should be suspicious. Get an independent report and do your research before you commission it. The pros: Wallpaper can transform a hard-surface room into an inviting space, with many options from organic patterns to geometrics with an incredible array of colours. They work well in bathrooms, which are normally very plain, to create a dynamic space. The cons: Wallpaper is only suitable for a bathroom that is well ventilated, either with an exhaust fan or window. Fabric and grass weaves are not suitable for bathrooms, as they will turn mouldy.
