TRIED BY Creative director Mia Daminato RATED 9/10 As a composter and worm farmer, I was keen to test the Breville FoodCycler. This machine dehydrates and grinds down food scraps, creating a kind of dry mulch. You can include meat, bones and citrus in the mix, so the reduction in the volume of our scraps was significant. The product that the FoodCycler converts waste into can then go straight onto the garden or pot plants. In its totality, the unit is quite large, so it’s best stored in the laundry or garage, but the bucket sat on my kitchen bench until it was full and ready to process. When we set out to examine the particular random objects that we collect in our own homes to create a comfortable space, it turned out that while we all have similar basic comfort needs – like starting with one great sofa – we approach the art of creating personal comfort zones quite differently. n 2013, when marketing guru Skye Healey Ward and her I partner Benjamin decided to start a family, they considered selling their diminutive terrace in Sydney’s historic Redfern and moving into more spacious premises away from the inner city. But the pair soon concluded that such a move would seriously cramp their style. “So much of our life was about socialising and going out to restaurants, seeing plays and gigs,” says Skye. “Being in Redfern gave us easy access to all that. We didn’t want to give up the lifestyle – and wanted our children to experience it, too. Also, we are quite serious about our environmental impact. “Focus on the end result” JOSIE SIMPSON, INTERIOR DESIGNER/OWNER “There are lots of surprises and twists and turns in a renovation, but always keep your resolve and focus on what you are trying to achieve. During our project, we had bushfires in the area and also flooding here, which was a good test of the gutters and drainage. Then, just as we finished the renovation, the pandemic was declared and Australia went into shutdown. We did question our wisdom of furnishing a holiday house [in this way], but kept the original plan in mind and continued, albeit with a little trepidation.”…

Swoon-worthy storage, pantry porn – call it what you like, but there’s something supremely satisfying about a well-organised kitchen set-up. “Good storage makes life easier by being more functional, plus it helps prevent excessive food waste and unnecessary spending on groceries,” says Amy Hare, interior design leader for Ikea Australia. The combination of a neat gravel base with sweeping circular beds and soft, loose plantings lends a beautiful Zen-garden serenity to this Melbourne courtyard. Chef Emma Warren had a series of other jobs before she discovered her passion for cooking and Spanish food in particular. In 2001, she moved to Spain and immersed herself in the colourful world of Catalan cuisine. While living there, she split her time working in restaurants and cafes between Mallorca and Barcelona, before returning to Australia, where she now enjoys working on cookbooks and other projects with national food icons such as Matt Preston and Karen Martini. In the decade since Emma Buchan founded design firm EB Interiors, she and her six-strong team have helped breathe life into dozens of newly constructed homes in Sydney’s picturesque Sutherland Shire and beyond. “New builds are common around here, particularly quite large family homes, because wealth is pouring into the area,” Emma explains. Interestingly, it wasn’t until recently that Emma and her husband Ben decided a new build might suit them, too. 1 I usually start the design process by asking clients how they like to access their pantry items. For example, if you have a growing family and are cooking a lot, you are probably getting items out of the pantry all the time. You are probably shopping all the time, too, and so continually restocking your pantry. Having inner drawers makes accessing items really easy. At first glance, the advertised property seemed quite modest: a dilapidated cottage with a scruffy backyard in the quiet Brisbane suburb of Coorparoo. A flowering meadow – complete with grazing cow – under a mighty river red gum in Melbourne’s inner east sets a pastoral tone for this garden by Inge Jabara and her team.
