Everything is opening up and starting again, summer’s coming and across the country we are stirring. It’s a kickstart and everyone is feeling it, which is why colour has been such a big topic for us at Inside Out recently. In this month’s planning meetings, we were desperate for joy and colour, and I know we’ve found it in these pages. Highlights include inspiring projects from people who’ve put the fun back into decorating homes, such as US-based Cortney and Robert Novogratz, who we admire for their family-friendly colour work; Tamsin Johnson, whose stellar rise in the design world has been fun to watch; and three talented Australian designers with wildly different colour palettes – creative powerhouses Yasmine Saleh Ghoniem, Julia Green and Claire Delmar. The type of homeowner who’s into designer furniture is a discerning one. Any piece to be purchased needs to be beautiful, well made, a conversation starter. Increasingly, the customers seeking this kind of furniture also expect that level of attention to extend to the piece’s sustainability. Designer furniture and lighting retailer Living Edge realised some time ago that quality is synonymous with sustainability – in this age of increased environmental awareness, quality alone isn’t going to cut it. My work with Inside Out magazine in the early 2000s involved styling houses and curating pages. What’s interesting about styling for photography is that you rarely ever add anything – it’s almost always about stripping back the room to reveal the true essence of the aesthetic within the frame of the camera. When I did add to interiors as a stylist, it was always colour. This might have been in the form of foliage, bare branches or flowers, a contrasting coloured throw or cushion, a pile of old leather-bound books placed against an aquamarine wall, a bright yellow raincoat hung on a coat rack in a candy-pink entrance hall, or a pair of cherry-red patent-leather shoes placed next to a time-worn tapestry chair. nostalgia trip Instead of starting over, a builder saved a heritage gem When Chris De Stratis’s grandparents emigrated from Italy, they settled in one of Melbourne’s inner-northern suburbs. His emotional bond to the area is enduring, so when it was time to fashion a home for his family, and the choice was a new build elsewhere or to overhaul their existing 1880s terrace in the same suburb, there was no contest. Chris took his time and cleared his share of renovation hurdles, but the result is a triumph of good taste and considered colour. Style of home A Victorian cottage in Melbourne’s southeast, built in 1890. Minnie and Chris began planning their whole-house renovation in early 2019. Demolition took place in December that year and the build began soon after. The project was completed in October 2020. future proof Expanding this family home called for lateral thinking Interior designer Sarah Reid and her husband Nick wanted to stay put in their Federation bungalow, despite it being a squeeze. So their architect came up with a creative solution – to widen the house. green getaway This inner-city garden is a lovely escape from chores In the back garden of a remodelled home in Sydney’s Redfern, a little bit of paradise has been created by Richard Unsworth of Garden Life. The base of the garden is smooth concrete, which flows out from the living area into a serene oasis of trees, creepers and carefully curated and placed plants. Key players include succulents, star jasmine, snake plant and spurflower, which more than fulfil the owner’s remit for greenery that would look amazing without much maintenance.
