Covid was a creative time for architect Félicie Chardon and decorative-finish expert Julien Fantone. Interiors had always been a passion for them in their respective businesses, but when things slowed down during the pandemic, the long-time friends combined their skills and came up with something unique. “Julien was my neighbour and we decided that, since we had more free time, we would launch a company that made objects, furniture and sculptures,” Félicie explains. “Initially, it was just a side business, but it went so well that we kept going. Renovations are rarely pulled off without speedbumps or messy pivots, but the complications surfaced for Nat and Zach Spadavecchia before a single sledgehammer collided with gyprock at Luck Cottage. The couple purchased the 1920s-era sandstone home in Helensburgh, south of Sydney, in December 2021, with a plan to make some cosmetic updates before settling into their family-rearing phase of life. BEFORE When Emily and Dan bought it, the house had been rented out for years, leaving it run-down and unsuitable for modern family life. Cue architect David Hansford, who took the 1880s structure (formerly called ‘Bristol Cottage’) and created a contemporary home with ground-floor living and a connection to the yard. As the pandemic closed in three years ago, Ivy Huang came across this home in Victoria’s Albert Park. It was in a dilapidated state – the typical worst house on the best street – and she couldn’t get it out of her head. While everyone panicked about the looming health crisis and [some] its effect on the real-estate market, Ivy kept any nagging doubts at bay. “The fact that this project was so challenging and so gross actually made it really attractive to me,” she says with a laugh. But renowned creative director Rachel Luchetti of Luchetti Krelle didn’t take the road well travelled when reimagining the lounge bar of the refurbished Manly Pacific Hotel. Layered with a rich, spice-inspired colour palette and ‘loose luxe’ finishes such as marble, timber and leather, it draws more from a New York speakeasy than a Hamptons inn.
